Arnie Johnson
Arnitz L. Johnson (May 16, 1920 – June 6, 2000) was an American professional basketball player. He played for the Rochester Royals of the National Basketball League (NBL) and National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1946 to 1953. Johnson is the only basketball player from Bemidji State to play in the NBA. Early life and college career Johnson was born on May 16, 1920, in Gonvick, Minnesota. His father was an immigrant from Sweden. Johnson attended Gonvick High School, where he served as a captain on the basketball team and was a four-time letterwinner. Johnson played college basketball for the Bemidji State Beavers (then Bemidji Teachers). He led the team to three consecutive Northern Teachers College Conference championships that led to berths in the NAIA Men's Basketball Championships. Gonvick, Minnesota
Gonvick is a city in Clearwater County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 263 at the 2020 census. Its peak population was 375 in 1950. History A post office called Gonvick has been in operation since 1900. The city was named for Martin O. Gonvick, a pioneer settler and native of Norway. The children in this area attend Clearbrook-Gonvick School, which is located in Clearbrook, which is approximately a five—minute commute away. The city of Gonvick had a school, which is now converted into a space for the Clearwater Life Center. It now includes a buy and sell, a florist, and numerous classes for varied activities. The Clearbrook Hornets and the Gonvick Bulldogs combined schools in 1992 as the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. 1949 BAA Playoffs
The 1949 BAA playoffs was the postseason tournament following the Basketball Association of America 1948–49 season, its third and last. Later that year the BAA and National Basketball League merged to create the National Basketball Association or NBA. The tournament concluded with the Western Division champion Minneapolis Lakers defeating the Eastern Division champion Washington Capitols 4 games to 2 in the BAA Finals. The eight qualified teams began tournament play on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 22 and 23, and the Finals concluded on Wednesday, April 13. Minneapolis and Washington played 10 and 11 games in a span of 22 days; their six final games in ten days. 1950–51 Rochester Royals Season
The 1950–51 Rochester Royals season was the third season for the team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Royals finished the season by winning their first NBA Championship. The Royals scored 84.6 points per game and allowed 81.7 points per game. Rochester was led up front by Arnie Risen, a 6–9, 200-pound center nicknamed "Stilts", along with 6–5 Arnie Johnson and 6–7 Jack Coleman. The backcourt was manned by Bob Davies and Bobby Wanzer. The 1948–49 BAA season was the third and final season of the Basketball Association of America. The 1949 BAA Playoffs ended with the Minneapolis Lakers winning the BAA Championship, beating the Washington Capitols 6 games in the BAA Finals.
