Arne, Dorset
Arne is a village and civil parish in Dorset, England, situated east of Wareham. The local travel links are located at Wareham railway station. Bournemouth International Airport is away. The main road through the village is Arne Road connecting Arne to Wareham. The village is situated on the Arne Peninsula, which protrudes into Poole Harbour opposite the town of Poole. Toponymy The name "Arne" is first recorded in 1268. It probably derives from the ang, ærn meaning a "house" or "building. Alternatively, it may derive from ang, 1=hær, link=no (dative plural ''hærum'') meaning "at the heaps of stones" or "at the tumuli". History Evidence of prehistoric human activity within the civil parish consists of 19 barrows and the remains of 4 linear dykes. Arne RSPB Reserve
Arne RSPB reserve is a nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) maintained by the RSPB and located in Dorset. It was notified as an SSSI in 1986 and the estuarine reedbeds within the site are designated as a national nature reserve. The reserve occupies the Arne Peninsula, which protrudes into Poole Harbour. Adjacent to the site is the village of Arne, although the nearest major settlement is the town of Wareham. The reserve opened in 1966 and is chiefly lowland heath, noted for the rare heather known as Dorset heath ('' Erica ciliaris''), and for its breeding Dartford warblers. It also has acid grassland, salt marsh and woodland, with reedbeds adjoining the mudflats of the harbour. Other important species include nightjar, woodlark and, on the mudflats, spoonbill. Arne ( grc, Ἄρνη) was the chief city of the Aeolian Boeotians in ancient Thessaly, which was said to have derived its name from the mythological Arne, a daughter of Aeolus. The town was said to have been founded three generations before the Trojan War. According to Thucydides the Aeolian Boeotians were expelled from Arne by the Thessalians sixty years after the Trojan war, and settled in the country called Boeotia after them; but other writers, inverting the order of events, represent the Thessalian Arne as founded by Boeotians, who had been expelled from their country by the Pelasgians.
