Ark Prize Of The Free Word
The Arkprijs van het Vrije Woord (Ark Prize of the Free Word) is a symbolic award created in 1951 by Herman Teirlinck and the editorial team of the ''Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift'' (New Flemish magazine) to counteract ideologically driven restrictions on the freedom of expression. Teirlinck wanted to spotlight those persons who actively promote the freedom of opinion. No financial reward is associated with the prize. The names of the laureates are engraved in an art object (the ''Ark'') kept in the AMVC in Antwerp. AMVC Ark 070628
The Letterenhuis ("House of Literature") is a Belgian non-profit organization located in Antwerp. The Letterenhuis collects and archives information of Flemish writers and artists, and portraits concerning Flemish culture as from 1750. The ''Letterenhuis'' fulfills two tasks: on the one hand it is an archiving and documentation centre and on the other hand it is a museum. The most interesting part of its collection are the manuscripts of famous Belgian authors like Hendrik Conscience, Willem Elsschot and the contemporary writer Tom Lanoye. In 2012 the Letterenhuis featured a theme exhibition about Louis Paul Boon to honor his one hundredth birth year. Paul Snoek
Edmond André Coralie Schietekat (17 December 1933 – 19 October 1981) pseudonym Paul Snoek, was a Belgian poet. He was a son of Omer William Schietekat, a textile manufacturer, and Paula Sylvia Snoeck. In 1961, he married Maria Magdalena Vereecke (Mylène), and together they had three children, a twin Jan and Paul in 1963 and in 1966 Sophie. He died in a car accident in Egem. Early life and education At the Nuns Catholic School in Berkenboom he was considered a mediocre student. He went to high school at the ''Sint-Lievenscollege'' in Antwerp and the ''Sint-Jozef Klein Seminarie'' in Sint-Niklaas, where he had Anton van Wilderode as a teacher. Freddy De Vree
Freddy de Vree (3 October 1939 in Antwerp – 3 July 2004 in Antwerp), pseudonym Marie-Claire de Jonghe, was a Belgian poet, literary critic and radiomaker. The past and death play an important role in his oeuvre. He was a friend of W.F. Hermans and Sylvia Kristel. Freddy de Vree made his literary debut in 1966 with Goudfluit (E: Golden flute). "The Internationale" (french: "L'Internationale", italic=no, ) is an international anthem used by various communist and socialist groups; currently, it serves as the official anthem of the Communist Party of China. It has been a standard of the socialist movement since the late nineteenth century, when the Second International adopted it as its official anthem. The title arises from the "First International", an alliance of workers which held a congress in 1864. The author of the anthem's lyrics, Eugène Pottier, an anarchist, attended this congress. Ferdinand Van der Auwera (26 November 1929, in Antwerp – 27 October 2015), pseudonym Fernand Auwera is a Belgian writer. His fragile health during his youth and its impact on his life (solitude), had an effect on his first literary work. Rob Goossens (b. Schriek, 1943) pseudonym Rob Goswin is a Belgian artist and poet. He is a teacher at the Royal Technical Athenaeum in Westerlo. In 1968, he founded, together with painter Jef Van Grieken and writer-actor Gerd de Ley, the magazine ''Rimschi''. He was also editor of the magazine ''Impuls'' and currently editor of ''Imago''. Marcel Van Maele
Marcel van Maele (Bruges, 10 April 1931 – Antwerp, 24 July 2009) was a Belgian playwright and sculptor. He was one of the leading figures of the magazine ''Labris'' (founded in 1962), in which an experimental style was prominent. He was a member of the ''Zestigers'' (E: Group of the sixties). Roger Van De Velde
Roger van de Velde (13 February 1925 - 30 May 1970) was a Belgian author and journalist, known for his collections of short stories written while he was interred in psychiatric institutions. Early and professional life Roger van de Velde was born in Boom, near Antwerp, the son of wine merchant Jan Frans van de Velde and Maria Callaer. When his father died in 1932, his mother remarried Louis Eykmans, a clerk at Willem Elsschot's advertising agency. He would become acquainted with the famous author, who assessed and gave advice about his poetry, as well as a short story, ''Scheiding van goederen'' (1954), which was published episodically in the magazine ''Standpunt''. van de Velde joined the Belgian Army at the age of 21, but left after a year. Patrick Conrad (born 16 July 1945 in Antwerp) is a Flemish poet, screenwriter and novelist, and one of the founders of The Pink Poets. He also directed about twenty movies for cinema and television, including – selected for the Cannes Festival – ''Mascara'' with Charlotte Rampling and Michael Sarrazin. Jef Geeraerts
Jozef Adriaan Anna Geeraerts (23 February 1930 – 11 May 2015), better known as Jef Geeraerts, was a Belgian writer. Geeraerts was born in Antwerp. After his studies in political and administrative sciences at the Colonial University of Belgium in Antwerp he became a colonial administrator in Belgian Congo. On the independence of the Congo he sent his wife and children back to Belgium and in August 1960 he himself returned to Belgium. During the next six years he was paid by the government (return program). After that time he needed to find a job to survive. He decided to become a writer and went to the University of Brussels to study Germanic languages.
