Appenzell is a village, a town, and the capital of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Switzerland. Appenzell has no municipal government of its own; rather, the different parts of Appenzell belong to and are governed by the districts (and municipalities) Appenzell, Schwende and Rüte. Because of that, for firefighting, energy and water, the village Appenzell has a special-purpose municipality, the Feuerschaugemeinde. History In 1071 the village was referred to as ''Abbacella''. By 1223 this changed to ''Abbatiscella'', meaning the Abbot's cell. This refers to the abbot of the Abbey of Saint Gall. Abbey Of Saint Gall
The Abbey of Saint Gall (german: Abtei St. Gallen) is a dissolved abbey (747–1805) in a Catholic religious complex in the city of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The Carolingian-era monastery existed from 719, founded by Saint Othmar on the spot where Gallus had erected his hermitage. It became an independent principality between 9th and 13th centuries, and was for many centuries one of the chief Benedictine abbeys in Europe. Walter Mittelholzer
Walter Mittelholzer (2 April 1894 – 9 May 1937) was a Swiss aviation pioneer. He was active as a pilot, photographer, travel writer, as well as of the first aviation entrepreneurs. Life Born on 2 April 1894 in St. Gallen as the son of a baker, Mittelholzer earned his private pilot's license in 1917. In 1918 he completed his instruction as a military pilot. On 5 November 1919 he co-founded an air-photo and passenger flight business, '' Comte, Mittelholzer, and Co.'' In 1920 this firm merged with the financially stronger Ad Astra Aero. Mittelholzer was the director and head pilot of Ad Astra Aero which later became Swissair. He made the first north–south flight across Africa. It took him 77 days. Mittelholzer started in Zürich on 7 December 1926, flying via Alexandria and landing in Cape Town on 21 February 1927. Hoher Kasten
The Hoher Kasten is a mountain in the Appenzell Alps, overlooking the Rhine in Eastern Switzerland. It is located on the border between the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen. The summit is easily accessible with a cable car starting at Brülisau, south of Appenzell. A revolving restaurant, offering panoramic views, has been built on the top. Roman Signer (born 1938 in Appenzell, Switzerland) is principally a visual artist who works in sculpture, art installations photography, and video. Early life and career Born in Appenzell, Switzerland, Signer started his career as an artist later in life at the age of 28, after working as an architect’s draughtsman, a radio engineer apprentice, and a short stint in a pressure cooker factory. He holds degrees from arts institutions in Switzerland and Poland. He studied at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich and Lucerne between 1966 and 1971. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland from 1971-1972. Work Signer's work has grown out of, and has affinities with both land art and performance art, but they are not typically representative of either category. Clanx Castle (german: Ruine Clanx) is a ruined castle in the Appenzell District of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Switzerland. History The castle is first mentioned in 1219 as ''in arce Clanx'', named after the Sax family holding in the Calanca valley. It was built by the Abbot of St. Gall Ulrich von Sax (1204–20) and his brother, the Abbey-Vogt Heinrich. The castle quickly became the center of the Abbey's lands in Appenzell. In 1236 Heinrich's uncle, the famous knight and minnesänger Heinrich III von Sax, took over the castle. Abbot is an ecclesiastical title given to the male head of a monastery in various Western religious traditions, including Christianity. Schwende District was a district in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Switzerland. Name In the 12th century the name was recorded as ''Swendi'' or ''swandjan''. This is a derivate of the German expression ''schwinden machen'' (wood clearing). History Schwende first came into existence between 1204 and 1220. On 1 May 2022, the former districts of Rüte and Schwende merged to form the new district of Schwende-Rüte. Geography Schwende has an area, , of .
