Anzac Square Mosaic Mural
The Anzac Square mosaic mural is a glass mosaic mural beneath the Shrine of Remembrance, Brisbane, Shrine of Remembrance, ANZAC Square, Brisbane, Anzac Square, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed and executed by Brisbane artist and dentist, Don Ross (artist), Don Ross (1917-2015), in 1959, and is the centrepiece of the World War II Memorial Galleries. Ross's mosaic is an abstract allusion to death and redemption, depicting three naked figures and a soul-like fourth ascending towards a stylised vision of heaven from a rocky outcrop. One figure lies prostrate on the rocks, the others are being drawn towards a burst of light. The form of this mural is considered to reflect the penetration of modern principles of design into traditional forms of commemoration. A mosaic is a pattern or image made of small regular or irregular pieces of colored stone, glass or ceramic, held in place by plaster/mortar, and covering a surface. Mosaics are often used as floor and wall decoration, and were particularly popular in the Ancient Rome, Ancient Roman world. Mosaic today includes not just murals and pavements, but also artwork, hobby crafts, and industrial and construction forms.
