Anglican Diocese Of Colombo
The Diocese of Colombo (Anglican Church of Ceylon) is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The diocesan bishop's seat is Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour. The current bishop of Colombo is Dushantha Lakshman Rodrigo. The Diocese of Colombo covers the Western, Southern, Eastern, Northern and Uva Provinces together with the Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya and Puttalam districts. History The first Church of England services were held on the island in 1796. In 1818, missionaries were sent to Ceylon to spread the church. Originally, it had been part of the diocese of Calcutta and later Madras. In 1930, the Church of India, Burma and Ceylon became autonomous. Ernest Copleston
Ernest Arthur Copleston (1855 – 24 August 1933) was an Anglican bishop in the first half of the 20th century. He was born in Barnes, Surrey, the fourth son of Rev. Reginald Edward, vicar of Barnes, fellow of Exeter College, Oxford,"Ecclesiastical Intelligence", ''The Times'' (London), Thursday, 30 January 1902; pg. 6; Issue 36678; col B and Anne Elizabeth née Sharpe, educated at St John's College, Oxford and ordained in 1878. His career began with curacies at St Luke's Church, Maidenhead and St. Paul's Church, Kandy. On 18 August 1883 he was appointed the incumbent at the Holy Emmanuel Church, Moratuwa, together with St Peter’s Church, Koralawella, and then Principal of the Diocesan Training College, Kandy until 1903. On 30 August 1903 he was consecrated as the fifth Anglican Bishop of Colombo at St. Paul's Cathedral, Calcutta. Dushantha Lakshman Rodrigo
Dushantha Lakshman Rodrigo (born 5 October 1968) is the 16th and current Anglican Bishop of Colombo. Early life Dushantha Lakshman Rodrigo was born in Trincomalee on 5 October 1968, the son of Arthur William Rodrigo and Ruth Adlene De Alwis, his parents married at the Jaffna Methodist Church in 1960. His father, Arthur, served in the Sri Lankan Navy. Education Rodrigo received his primary and secondary education at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. He later joined the Theological College of Lanka. He holds a PgD in Counselling and Psychosocial Support from the University of Colombo, and an MA in Development Studies from the Open University of Sri Lanka. Dhiloraj Canagasabey
Dhiloraj Ranjit Canagasabey (born 23 May 1955) is a Sri Lankan Tamil bishop who was the Anglican Bishop of Colombo in the Church of Ceylon from 14 May 2011 to 28 September 2020. Early life and family Canagasabey was born on 23 May 1955 in a Tamil family in Batticaloa, Ceylon. He was educated at the St. Michael's College National School. Canagasabey is married to Harshini, a Sinhalese from Colombo. They have a daughter (Dhilukshini) and a son (Dhiranjan). Career After school Canagasabey joined the hospitality industry as management trainee at hotel school, later working at the Hotel Lanka Oberoi for five years. However, he later left the industry to study theology at the Theological College of Lanka, Pilimatalawa in 1977. Duleep De Chickera
Duleep Kamil De Chickera is the 14th Anglican Bishop of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was inaugurated in 2001. Educated at Royal College, Colombo representing the college at 1st XV Rugby, he gained his training for the ministry at Theological College of Lanka in Pilimathalawa, earning a B.Th thereafter earning a M.Sc. from Keble College, Oxford. He had served first as chaplain and then as the sub-warden of S. Thomas' College, Mt Lavinia from 1983 to 1989 before being consecrated as a bishop. Bishop Duleep was accorded an honour in 2008 when he preached a key sermon at the Lambeth Conference in the presence of 650 Bishops from around the world. The conference was boycotted by around 200 bishops over the issues of sexuality and gender. Jabez Jebasir Gnanapragasam (30 July 1924 – 1 November 1997) was the 12th Anglican Bishop of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was educated at Trinity College, Kandy, read History at University of Ceylon and Theology at Bishop's College, Calcutta. He was married to Grace (24 February 1934 – 2 October 2019) from 1953 until his death in November 1997. His brother, Emmanuel was also an Anglican priest. Swithin Fernando
Swithin Winston Fernando was an Anglican Bishop of Colombo in Sri Lanka. An alumnus of Prince of Wales' College, Moratuwa he was the Archdeacon of Colombo in 1971 and consecrated Bishop of Colombo in January 1978. Harold De Soysa
Charles Harold Wilfred de Soysa MA (1907-1971) was the first Ceylonese Anglican Bishop of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Born to Sir Wilfred and Lady Evelyn de Soysa, he was educated at Royal College, Colombo and graduated from Oriel College, Oxford obtaining Second Class Honours in Theology. Thereafter he was trained for the Priesthood at Cuddesdon College and was ordained in 1934 at St Paul's Cathedral. After working in England for a short period, he returned to Ceylon to serve in Kandy and Moratuwa. He was the Principal of the Colombo Divinity School and was made the Archdeacon of Colombo in 1955. In 1964 he became the first Ceylonese Bishop of Colombo and was one of only two Bishops of Colombo to be elected uncontested. Rollo Graham Campbell
The Rt Revd Archibald Rollo Graham Campbell CBE (18 February 1903 – 11 April 1978) was an Anglican bishop in the mid-20th century. Graham Campbell was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge and after a period of study at Cuddesdon College was ordained deacon in 1926 and priest in 1927. His career began with a curacy of St John, Middlesbrough. Next he was an Assistant Master at his old school and then Vicar of St Paul, King Cross. The Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe, commonly known as the Bishop in Europe, is the ordinary of the Church of England's Diocese in Europe in the Province of Canterbury. Overview The diocese provides the ministry of Anglican chaplains, not only in the area of Gibraltar in British jurisdiction but also in all of mainland Europe, Morocco and the territory of the former Soviet Union. The see is based in the City of Gibraltar where the bishop's seat is located at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity. Between 1993 and 2013, the bishop's residence was in England at Bishop's Lodge in Worth, Crawley, West Sussex (close to Gatwick Airport, to facilitate ease of travel).
