''Emmerdale'' is a British soap opera first broadcast on 16 October 1972. The following is a list of characters that first appeared in 1993, by order of first appearance. All characters were introduced by either Morag Bain or Nicholas Prosser, the show's series producers. The first character Shirley Foster was introduced in May as a new love interest for Alan Turner. Two new Southern families were also introduced, The Windsors and McAllisters, in August and December, respectively. American Wine Merchant Josh Lewis began appearing in September. Shirley Turner Shirley Turner (née Foster), played by Rachel Davies, made her debut screen appearance in 1993. Shirley meets Alan Turner (Richard Thorp) and they begin dating. Emmerdale
''Emmerdale'' (known as ''Emmerdale Farm'' until 1989) is a British soap opera that is broadcast on ITV1. The show is set in Emmerdale (known as Beckindale until 1994), a fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales. Created by Kevin Laffan, ''Emmerdale Farm'' was first broadcast on 16 October 1972. Interior scenes have been filmed at the Leeds Studios since its inception. Exterior scenes were first filmed in Arncliffe in Littondale, and the series may have taken its name from Amerdale, an ancient name of Littondale. Exterior scenes were later shot at Esholt, but are now shot at a purpose-built set on the Harewood estate. The programme is broadcast in every ITV region. The series originally aired during the afternoon and was intended to be a three-month television series. Billy Hopwood
William "Billy" Hopwood is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera, ''Emmerdale'', played by David Crellin. Casting Crellin first appeared in ''Emmerdale'' in 1997, when Billy was one of a host of new characters producers introduced into the series that year. He departed after one year and returned briefly in 2003. In November 2006, it was announced that Crellin had agreed to reprise the role of Billy. Crellin told '' Digital Spy'' that the serial's producers contacted him six months prior asking him to return. Crellin had always found the role "enjoyable" so thought it was a great idea to return. Although he accepted straight away, his only reservation was that Billy would behave in the same way he previously did. Billy Hartman
Billy Hartman (born 1957) is a Scottish actor, well known for playing the part of Terry Woods on ITV's ''Emmerdale'' from 1995 until his character was killed off in 2011 after 16 years. Career Together with ''Emmerdale'' co-stars Steve Halliwell and Alun Lewis, he was a member of UK 1990s country rock trio The Woolpackers, who had a UK hit single "Hillbilly Rock Hillbilly Roll" in November 1996. He also played a small role in the film ''Highlander''. He played the part of Dougal MacLeod, cousin of Connor McLeod. Under the name GBH, Hartman was the host of the rock 'n' roll revival television show '' Oh Boy'' in 1979. Hartman also starred in the comedy series ''Russ Abbots Madhouse in the early 1980s. Terry Woods (Emmerdale)
Terry Woods is a fictional character from the British television soap opera ''Emmerdale'', played by Billy Hartman. He was one of the longest-serving characters in the show when he was killed off alongside Viv Hope (Deena Payne) in early 2011, after 16 years. Development Hartman said he found his audition for the role daunting. Terry was meant to be a former rugby player and there were five "really huge blokes" also waiting to audition, which made Hartman think he had come for the wrong job. Hayward 1991, p.141. He won the role and was paired with Michelle Holmes who was cast as Terry's wife Britt Woods. It was known that Holmes was only staying for six months and Hartman assumed that he would be leaving too, which is why he accepted the part. Donna Windsor
Donna Windsor (also Windsor-Dingle) is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera ''Emmerdale''. She was originally played by Sophie Jeffery until 1997. Actress Verity Rushworth took over the role in 1998. She made her first appearance in the show on 31 August 1993. Donna departed on 30 January 2009. At the time of her departure, Donna was the third longest running character on ''Emmerdale''. It was announced on 8 January 2014 that Rushworth had decided to reprise her role as Donna for five months. Ben Freeman
Benedict Freeman (born 8 April 1980) is an English actor, known for portraying the role of Scott Windsor in the ITV soap opera ''Emmerdale''. After leaving ''Emmerdale'' in 2007, he embarked on a career in musical theatre, and has since played various roles in the West End. In 2021, he joined the cast of the BBC soap opera ''EastEnders'' as Caleb Malone. Career Freeman's first role was playing Chris Longworth in the children's series ''Grange Hill'', a role he portrayed from 1996 to 1998. After leaving ''Grange Hill'', ''Emmerdale'' decided to cast Freeman in the role of Scott Windsor, taking over from previous actor Toby Cockerell. He portrayed the role for nine years. Scott Windsor
Scott Windsor (also Dawson) is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera, ''Emmerdale''. From 1993 to 1996, Scott was played by Toby Cockerell. In 1996, Scott left the village to join the army and when he returned in 1998, Ben Freeman took over the role and played Scott until early 2007. Victor "Vic" Windsor is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera, ''Emmerdale'', played by Alun Lewis for a period of five years, from 1993 until 1998. Vic was the second husband of shopkeeper, Viv Windsor (Deena Payne), and also father of Kelly Windsor (Adele Silva) and Donna Windsor (Verity Rushworth).
