Amur-class Minelayer (1898)
The ''Amur''-class minelayers were the first purpose-built, ocean-going minelayers in the world.Russian Minelayers ''Amur'' and ''Yenisei'', p. 205 The class consisted of two vessels: ''Amur'' and ''Yenisei''. Both ships were constructed for the Imperial Russian Navy in the late 1890s. During the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05 they were assigned to the Pacific Fleet. ''Yenisei'' struck one of her own mines two days after the war began while laying a minefield and sank. One of ''Amur''s minefields sank the Japanese pre-dreadnought battleships and . ''Amur'' was sunk by Japanese howitzers in December 1904 after the Japanese had gained control of the heights around Port Arthur. She was later salvaged and scrapped by the Japanese. The OJSC Baltic Shipyard (''Baltiysky Zavod'', formerly Shipyard 189 named after Grigoriy Ordzhonikidze) (russian: Балтийский завод имени С. Орджоникидзе) is one of the oldest shipyards in Russia and is part of United Shipbuilding Corporation today. It is located in Saint Petersburg in the south-western part of Vasilievsky Island. Lüshunkou District (also Lyushunkou District; ) is a district of Dalian, Liaoning province, China. Also formerly called Lüshun City () or literally Lüshun Port (), it was formerly known as both Port Arthur (russian: Порт-Артур, translit=Port-Artur) and Ryojun ( ja, 旅順). Protected cruisers, a type of naval cruiser of the late-19th century, gained their description because an armoured deck offered protection for vital machine-spaces from fragments caused by shells exploding above them. Protected cruisers resembled armored cruisers, which had in addition a belt of armour along the sides. Dalian Bay
Dalian Bay (), known historically as Talienwan, Talien-wan and Talien-hwan, is a bay on the southeast side of the Liaodong Peninsula () of Northeast China, open to the Korea Bay in the Yellow Sea () in the east. Downtown Dalian lies along the southern shore of the bay. Its significance is that it is ice-free year-round, while Jinzhou Bay () on the other, northwest side of the peninsula is part of the Bohai Sea (), and is shallow and closed by ice for four months of the winter. Hotchkiss Gun
The Hotchkiss gun can refer to different products of the Hotchkiss arms company starting in the late 19th century. It usually refers to the 1.65-inch (42 mm) light mountain gun; there were also a navy (47 mm) and a 3-inch (76 mm) Hotchkiss guns. The draft or draught of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The draught of the vessel is the maximum depth of any part of the vessel, including appendages such as rudders, propellers and drop keels if deployed.
