Alzenau (; until 31 December 2006 officially ''Alzenau i.UFr.'') is a town in the north of the Aschaffenburg (district), Aschaffenburg district in the ''Regierungsbezirk'' of Lower Franconia (''Unterfranken'') in Bavaria, Germany. Until 1 July 1972, Alzenau was the district seat of the now abolished district of the same name and has a population of around 19,000. Geography Location Alzenau is one of the eastern outliers of the Frankfurt Rhine Main Region and is crossed by the river Kahl (river), Kahl. Most of its constituent communities nestle on or between the slopes of the western outliers of the Spessart with its Hahnenkamm (Spessart), Hahnenkamm (436 m above Normalhöhennull). Mömbris
Mömbris is a community – since 31 January 1964 a market community – in the Aschaffenburg district in the ''Regierungsbezirk'' of Lower Franconia (''Unterfranken'') in Bavaria, Germany. With over 11,000 inhabitants, Mömbris is the district's fifth largest community. Spessart
Spessart is a ''Mittelgebirge'', a range of low wooded mountains, in the States of Bavaria and Hesse in Germany. It is bordered by the Vogelsberg, Rhön and Odenwald. The highest elevation is the Geiersberg at 586 metres above sea level. Etymology The name is derived from "Spechtshardt". ''Specht'' is the German word for woodpecker and ''Hardt'' is an outdated word meaning "hilly forest". Bundesautobahn 45
is an autobahn in Germany, connecting Dortmund in the west with Aschaffenburg in the southwest. It is colloquially known as the ''Sauerlandlinie'' (Sauerland line) as it runs through the hilly, rural Sauerland region between Hagen and Siegen. The A45 has many bridges to cross valleys, the highest of which is the Sichter Valley bridge (''Talbrücke Sichter'') between Lüdenscheid and Meinerzhagen at 530 metres above mean sea level. Schanzenkopf (Spessart)
Schanzenkopf (Spessart) is a wooded hill of Bavaria, Germany. It lies in the ''Mittelgebirge'' Spessart in the district of Aschaffenburg. Schanzenkopf has a maximum elevation of 343 metres. It is located in the municipal territory of Alzenau and is part of the ridge Hahnenkamm, the highest elevation of which lies just to the northeast of Schanzenkopf. Hahnenkamm (Spessart) is a ridge of hills in the northwest of the Spessart range of Bavaria, Germany. It has an elevation of up to 435.5 m above NHN. Geography Location Hahnenkamm lies east of Alzenau in the district of Aschaffenburg in the far northwest of the state of Bavaria. Aschaffenburg (Low Franconian: ''Ascheberg'') is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in Bavaria, Germany. The Kahl is a river in the northern Spessart in Bavaria and Hesse, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Main (river), Main and is long. The name Kahl comes from the Old High German word ''kaldaha'', which means cool and clear. Lower Franconia (german: Unterfranken) is one of seven districts of Bavaria, Germany. The districts of Lower, Middle and Upper Franconia make up the region of Franconia. History After the founding of the Kingdom of Bavaria the state was totally reorganised and, in 1808, divided into 15 administrative government regions (German: , singular ), in Bavaria called (singular: ). They were created in the fashion of the French departements, quite even in size and population, and named after their main rivers. In the following years, due to territorial changes (e. g. loss of Tyrol, addition of the Palatinate), the number of Kreise was reduced to 8. One of these was the Untermainkreis (Lower Main District). Freigericht
Freigericht is a municipality in the Main-Kinzig district, in Hesse, Germany. It is situated 15 km east of Hanau, close to the Frankfurt Rhein-Main region at the foothills of the Spessart, directly at the Hesse-Bavaria border. More than 40% of the area is forested.
