Alphonse Wauters
Alphonse Wauters (1817–1898) was a Belgian archivist and historian. Life Alphonse Guillaume Ghislain Wauters was born in Brussels on 13 April 1817. He was appointed archivist of the city of Brussels on 2 April 1842. He became a correspondent of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium in 1860, and a member in 1868. In January 1886, after the death of Louis Prosper Gachard, he became the academy's secretary-treasurer. Henri Pirenne
Henri Pirenne (; 23 December 1862 – 24 October 1935) was a Belgian historian. A medievalist of Walloon descent, he wrote a multivolume history of Belgium in French and became a prominent public intellectual. Pirenne made a lasting contribution to the study of cities that was a controversial interpretation of the end of Roman civilization and the rebirth of medieval urban culture. He also became prominent in the nonviolent resistance to the Germans who occupied Belgium in World War I. Henri Pirenne's reputation today rests on three contributions to European history: for what has become known as the Pirenne Thesis, concerning origins of the Middle Ages in reactive state formation and shifts in trade; for a distinctive view of Belgium's medieval history; and for his model of the development of the medieval city. Louis Prosper Gachard
Louis Prosper Gachard (12 March 1800 – 24 December 1885), Belgian man of letters, was born in Paris. He entered the administration of the national archives in 1826, and was appointed director-general in 1831, a post which he held for fifty-five years. During this long period he reorganized the service, added to the records by copies taken in other European collections, travelled for purposes of study, and carried on a wide correspondence with other keepers of records, and with historical scholars. He also edited and published many valuable collections of state papers; a full list of his various publications was printed in the ''Annuaire de l'Académie royale de Belgique'' by Ch. Piot in 1888, pp. 220–236. It includes 246 entries. Joseph Cuvelier
Joseph Cuvelier (1869–1947) was a Belgian archivist and historian. Life Cuvelier was born in Bilzen on 6 May 1869 and was educated at state secondary schools there and in Tongeren.Camille Tihon, "Cuvelier (Joseph)", ''Biographie Nationale de Belgique''vol. 31(Brussels, 1961), 240-244. He studied history at the University of Liège under Godefroid Kurth, graduating with a doctorate in 1892. At the end of 1894 he was appointed to the State Archives in Liège. On 30 June 1896 he was appointed assistant conservator of the State Archives in Bruges, and in 1900 to the National Archives of Belgium in Brussels, where he would remain for 35 years. At Arthur Gaillard's death in 1912 he became acting head archivist, and was appointed to the function of head archivist in 1913. The ''Biographie nationale de Belgique'' (French; "National Biography of Belgium") is a biographical dictionary of Belgium. It was published by the Royal Academy of Belgium in 44 volumes between 1866 and 1986. A continuation series, entitled the ''Nouvelle Biographie Nationale'' ("New National Biography"), has been published by the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium since 1988. Both the ''Biographie nationale'' and ''Nouvelle biographie nationale'' were digitised by the Fonds InBev-Baillet Latour and can be freely consulted at the Academy's website. Antoine Louis Camille Lemonnier (24 March 1844 – 13 June 1913) was a Belgian writer, poet and journalist. He was a member of the Symbolist ''La Jeune Belgique'' group, but his best known works are realist. His first work was ''Salon de Bruxelles'' (1863), a collection of art criticism. His best known novel is ''Un Mâle'' (1881). Biography Lemonnier was born in Ixelles, Brussels. He studied law, and then took a clerkship in a government office, which he resigned after three years.
