Alliance Party (United States)
The Alliance Party is a centrist American political party formed in 2019. It is affiliated with the American Party of South Carolina, Independence Party of Minnesota, Independent Party of Connecticut, and Reform Party of Florida. In 2020, Independence Party of New York affiliated with the Alliance Party, but disaffiliated in 2021. History Formation On May 10, 2016, the Independence Party of Minnesota and the Independent Party of Oregon announced that they would seek to unite fourteen centrist minor political parties and possibly run a presidential candidate. Bernie Sanders won the Independent Party of Oregon's presidential primary, but could not run due to sore-loser legislation and the Independent Party of Oregon chose to not nominate a presidential candidate. Independence Party Of New York
The Independence Party is a political party in the U.S. state of New York. The party was founded in 1991 by Dr. Gordon Black, Tom Golisano, and Laureen Oliver from Rochester, New York, and acquired ballot status in 1994. They lost their ballot status in 2020 under a change in the New York state election law that required at least 130,000 votes on the party line every two years. Although often associated with Ross Perot, as the party came to prominence in the wake of Perot's 1992 presidential campaign, it was created prior to Perot's run. In 2020, it affiliated with the Alliance Party, but disaffiliated in 2021. He has been an unsuccessful candidate in several Florida state legislature elections, and a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2016 election. Gregory John Orman (born December 2, 1968) is an American politician, businessman, and entrepreneur. He ran as an independent to represent Kansas in the United States Senate in the 2014 election, earning 42.5 percent of the vote and losing to incumbent U.S. Senator Pat Roberts. On January 24, 2018, Orman announced he would run again as an independent this time for Kansas governor. Jim Rex (born November 21, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio) was the 16th South Carolina Superintendent of Education. He ran for the position in 2006 as a South Carolina Democratic Party, Democrat, against Karen Floyd, a South Carolina Republican Party, Republican. Rex defeated Floyd by only 455 votes, the closest margin of victory in a statewide election in South Carolina's history. Sore-loser Law
In United States politics, a sore loser law is a law prohibiting the loser in a primary election from then running as an independent or representing another political party in the general election. Some states accomplish the same goal by having simultaneous registration dates for the primary and the general election. Only the states of Connecticut, Iowa, and New York have neither a sore loser law nor simultaneous registration deadlines. In most states these laws do not apply to presidential candidates. Constitutionality Opponents have argued that sore loser laws constitute a violation of the Constitution, and have launched court challenges on those grounds.
