Roderick Alleyn
Roderick Alleyn (pronounced "Allen") is a fictional character who first appeared in 1934. He is the policeman hero of the 32 detective novels of Ngaio Marsh. Marsh and her gentleman detective belong firmly in the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, although the last Alleyn novel, ''Light Thickens'', was published in 1982. Marsh mentions in an introduction that she named her detective Alleyn after the Elizabethan actor Edward Alleyn, founder of Dulwich College, where her father had been a pupil. She started a novel with Alleyn in 1931, after reading a detective story by Agatha Christie or Dorothy L. Sayers on a wet Saturday afternoon in London and wondering if she could write something in the genre. Edward Alleyn
Edward "Ned" Alleyn (; 1 September 156621 November 1626) was an English actor who was a major figure of the Elizabethan theatre and founder of the College of God's Gift in Dulwich. Early life Alleyn was born on 1 September 1566 in Bishopsgate, London; or so it was recorded in the ''Biographia Britannica'' as a product of Alleyn's own writing. Alleyn does record his birth date in a diary several times but not distinctly identifies his birthplace as Bishopsgate. In the St. Botolph parish registers it is recorded that he was baptized on the day after his birth. He was born a younger son of Edward Alleyn with three brothers named John, William, and Edward. His father was an innkeeper and porter to Queen Elizabeth I and his mother, Margaret Townley, was the daughter of John Townley. His mother's link to the Lancashire Townley family is somewhat of a mystery. Matthias Alleyn (died 9 April 1642) was a 17th-century London gentleman and the second Master of the College of God's Gift. Early life He was born the cousin of Edward Alleyn in London. His first wife, Elizabeth, died in 1627. With his second wife he had two daughters. Sir John Alleyne, 1st Baronet
Sir John Gay Alleyne, 1st Baronet (28 April 1724 – 1801) Barbadian politician and the first of the Alleyne baronets which still exists today. Background Alleyne descended from the first settlers on Barbados and was born at St James as the second son of John Alleyne and his wife Mary Terrill, daughter of William Terrill. On 19 October 1746 at St James Church, Barbados, he married Cristen Dottin, fourth daughter of Anne Jordan Dottin and Joseph Dottin, with whom he had a son. After her death in 1782, Alleyne remarried his forty years younger cousin Jane, daughter of Abel Alleyne, on 29 June 1786. With her, he had five daughters and two more sons. Sir John Gay Newton Alleyne, 3rd Baronet (8 September 1820 – 20 February 1912) was a British businessman and engineer. Biography Alleyne was born in Alleynedale Hall in Barbados, the son of Sir Reynold Abel Alleyne, 2nd Baronet, and his wife Rebecca, daughter of John Alton. He was educated at Harrow School and in Bonn University. His first work was in the sugar industry in his home in Barbados, on his family slave plantation. James Alleyn
James Allen (4 May 1683 – 28 October 1746) was a prominent 18th-century educationalist, Master of the College of God's Gift in Dulwich (then colloquially called "Dulwich College") and was the founder of James Allen's Girls' School. Early life Born on 4 May 1683 in Hornsey, North London, he later moved to Sussex. His father, also James Allen, drowned in an accident in 1690, after which his mother, Elizabeth, moved the family to Westminster and remarried. By 1701, James Allen was a clerk in the Cursitors' Hall, the clerical branch of the Court of Chancery. Job and career James Allen took the role of Warden of the college on 26 May 1712 under the name James Alleyn and became Master on 1 September 1721. Charles Joseph Alleyn
Charles Joseph Alleyn (19 September 1817 – 4 April 1890) was a Quebec lawyer and political figure. He was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1817 and studied at Clongowes Wood College. Alleyn came to Lower Canada with his family around 1837. He was called to the bar in 1840. He supported the annexation movement in Quebec. He served on the city council for Quebec City from 1851 to 1857, serving as mayor in 1854. In 1854, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Quebec City. He supported the abolition of seigneurial tenure, an elected Legislative Council and separate schools. He served on the Executive Council as Commissioner of Public Works from 1857 to 1858 in the ministry of Macdonald-Cartier, and Provincial Secretary from 1858 to 1862 in the similarly constituted ministry of Cartier-Macdonald.
