Alister Clavering Hardy
Sir Alister Clavering Hardy (10 February 1896 – 22 May 1985) was an English Marine biology, marine biologist, an expert on marine ecosystems spanning organisms from zooplankton to whales. He had the artistic skill to illustrate his books with his own drawings, maps, diagrams, and paintings. Hardy served as zoologist on the RRS Discovery, RRS ''Discovery''s Discovery Investigations, voyage to explore the Antarctic between 1925 and 1927. On the voyage he invented the Continuous Plankton Recorder; it enabled any ship to collect plankton samples during an ordinary voyage. After retiring from his academic work, Hardy founded the Religious Experience Research Centre in 1969; he won the Templeton Prize for this in 1985. Richard Hardy (architect)
Colonel Richard Hardy (1850 - 1 October 1904) was a British architect based in Nottingham. History He was born in 1850, the son of John Hardy of Colwick. He married Elizabeth Hannah Clavering, daughter of Thomas Clavering of Glasgow, on 27 November 1884 at St Barnabas’ Church, Kensington. They had two children: *Vernon Hardy (b. ca. 1894) *Alister Hardy, the English marine biologist. In 1870 he joined the Robin Hood Regiment in Nottingham as an ensign. Later he was given the command of the Newcastle Company, and after 15 years’ service was promoted to the rank of major. In 1892 he was awarded the Volunteer Officers' Decoration. In 1901, on the resignation of Colonel Joseph Wright, he took over command of the 2nd Battalion of the Robin Hood Rifles. He was articled to Richard Charles Sutton Richard Charles Sutton was an architect based in Nottingham. He was born 1834 and died on 18 October 1915.
