Alice Merrill Horne
Alice Merrill Horne (1868–1948) was a Utah artist and politician. Biography Early life and education Alice Merrill Horne (called Allie in her youth) was born in Fillmore, Utah Territory, to Clarence Merrill and his wife Bathsheba (Kate) Smith. Her maternal grandparents were George A. Smith and Bathsheba W. Smith. Horne earned a teaching certificate and degree in pedagogy at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah). She also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was later instructed privately by artists John Hafen, George M. Ottinger, J. T. Harwood, Herman Haag, Mary Teasdel, and Henry Taggart. Alice Merrill Horne married George H. Horne in 1890. They met while Alice Horne was organizing a Shakespearean Society. George would spend much of his career as a banker in Salt Lake City. Maria Young Dougall
Clarissa Maria Dougall ( Young; December 10, 1849 – April 30, 1935) was a Utah suffragist and a member of the general presidency of what is today the Young Women organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Maria Young was born in Salt Lake City to Brigham Young and his eighth wife, Clarissa Ross. When she was eight years old, her mother Clarissa died, so from that point forward she was raised by Zina D. H. Young, another of Brigham Young's wives. Maria Young married William B. Dougall on June 1, 1868. She was at the foundational meeting of the LDS Church's Young Ladies' Department of the Cooperative Retrenchment Association in 1869. Anna Maria Ballantyne "Annie" Taylor Hyde (October 21, 1849 – March 12, 1909) was the founder and first president of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and was a women's leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Anna Maria Ballantyne Taylor was born in a Mormon pioneer wagon shortly after her parents, LDS Church apostle John Taylor and Jane Ballantyne, had arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Taylor's mother, Jane Ballantyne Taylor, was a sister of Richard Ballantyne, the founder of the LDS Sunday School. Taylor was educated at the University of Deseret.
