Alexander Vasilievich Polyakov (russian: Александр Васильевич Поляков; 1801, place unknown - 9 January 1835, St. Petersburg) was a Russian portrait painter. Biography He was a serf attached to the estate of General . In 1822, he was given to the English portrait painter, George Dawe, as an assistant. Under the agreement, he would "work and study" with Dawe, on the condition that he be allowed to attend evening classes at the Imperial Academy of Arts. His salary was set at 800 Rubles per year. Serfdom was the status of many peasants under feudalism, specifically relating to manorialism, and similar systems. It was a condition of debt bondage and indentured servitude with similarities to and differences from slavery, which developed during the Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages in Europe and lasted in some countries until the mid-19th century. Unlike slaves, serfs could not be bought, sold, or traded individually though they could, depending on the area, be sold together with land. The kholops in Russia, by contrast, could be traded like regular slaves, could be abused with no rights over their own bodies, could not leave the land they were bound to, and could marry only with their lord's permission. Alexey Olenin
Alexey Nikolayevich Olenin (Aleksey Nikolaevich Olenin, russian: Алексей Николаевич Оленин; in Moscow – in Saint Petersburg) was a Russian archaeologist, most notable for being a director of the Imperial Public Library between 1811 and 1843 and the sixth president of the Imperial Academy of Arts between 1817 and 1843. Early life Olenin was born into a noble family in Moscow. He received his initial education at home. Then in 1774, as was customary at the time among Russian aristocracy, he was enrolled in the Corps of Pages. In 1780 he was sent to study history and art history in Dresden. Military Gallery Of The Winter Palace
The Military Gallery (russian: Военная галерея) is a gallery of the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The gallery is a setting for 332 portraits of generals who took part in the Patriotic War of 1812. The portraits were painted by George Dawe and his Russian assistants Alexander Polyakov (1801–1835), a serf, and Wilhelm August Golicke. The top-lit, barrel-vaulted hall in which the gallery is accommodated was designed by architect Carlo Rossi and constructed from June to November 1826. It replaced several small rooms in the middle of the main block of the Winter Palace - between the White Throne Hall and the Greater Throne Hall, just a few steps from the palace church.
