Alejo Véliz
Alejo Véliz Lazo (born February 9, 1957) is a Bolivian politician and activist. He is a member of the ASP party. Véliz is a former executive secretary of the Federación Sindical Única de Trabajadores Campesinos de Cochabamba (FSUTCC), and former Secretary General of the Confederación Sindical Única de Trabajadores Campesinos de Bolivia (CSUTCB). The Assembly for the Sovereignty of the Peoples ( es, Asamblea por la Soberanía de los Pueblos, ASP) was a political organization in Bolivia. It was formed as a "political instrument" of the popular movements of the country. Alejo Véliz was the national president of ASP. History ASP was founded at a congress in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in 1995 titled 'Land, Territory and Political Instrument'. Present at the congress were CSUTCB, CSCB, the Bartolina Sisa National Federation of Peasant Women of Bolivia and CIDOB. The congress had been convened by CSUTCB following a decision at its congress in 1994. The Cochabamba peasant leader Alejo Véliz became the main leader of ASP with Evo Morales in second position. Confederación Sindical Única De Trabajadores Campesinos De Bolivia
The Unified (or Sole) Syndical Confederation of Rural Workers of Bolivia (, CSUTCB) is the largest union of peasants in Bolivia. The CSUTCB was formed in 1979 in opposition to government-sponsored peasant unions, and immediately replaced the National Confederation of Peasant Workers of Bolivia. Under the leadership of the Tupaj Katari Revolutionary Movement, the CSUTCB became an independent organization. The CSUTCB became involved in the Central Obrera Boliviana labor federation and (because of the decline of the miners' federation) became a leading force in the COB. Through the CSUTCB's pressure, the COB moved beyond a purely class-based focus to address indigenous demands, as well. During the 1990s the CSUTCB moved beyond its support base of Aymara-speaking indigenous people, bringing Guaraní- and Quechua-speaking indigenous into its ranks. Manfred Reyes Villa
Manfred Armando Antonio Reyes Villa Bacigalupi (born April 19, 1954) is a Bolivian politician, businessman, and former military officer. He was elected mayor of the city of Cochabamba five consecutive times, and became the elected Prefect of the Department of Cochabamba from 2006 until 2008 when he was recalled in that year's no confidence referendum. He was an unsuccessful candidate for president in both 2002 and 2009, being the second runner in the latter. In 2009, he fled to the United States via Peru to avoid political persecution from the government of Morales, living in Miami for nearly 10 years. New Republican Force
The New Republican Force (Spanish: ''Nueva Fuerza Republicana'', NFR) is a center-right political party in Bolivia. It is mainly based in the department of Cochabamba. History The NFR was founded in 1995. After the Assembly for the Sovereignty of the Peoples' (ASP) success in the 1999 municipal elections in Cochabamba, the NFR offered ASP leader Alejo Véliz and other peasant activists top candidate positions and won them over. At the legislative elections in 2002, the party won 26.5% of the popular vote and 27 out of 130 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and two out of 27 seats in the Senate. Its candidate at the presidential elections, Manfred Reyes Villa, won 20.9% of the popular vote. After the election, the party joined the multiparty coalition of president Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada of the Revolutionary Nationalist Movement (MNR).
