Alcuin Society
A voluntary association established in 1965 by Geoff Spencer, the Alcuin Society is a non-profit organisation founded for the book arts. It is located in Canada. It should not be confused with the Alcuin Club, an Anglican publishing society. Among the other six founding members is Basil Stuart-Stubbs. The society is named after Alcuin of York. Awards Since 1981, the society has awarded an Annual Award for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. It is the ony national book design competition. In 2007, the society started awarding the Robert R. Reid Award and Medal for lifetime achievement or extraordinary contributions to the book arts in Canada. Robert R. Voluntary Association
A voluntary group or union (also sometimes called a voluntary organization, common-interest association, association, or society) is a group of individuals who enter into an agreement, usually as volunteering, volunteers, to form a body (or organization) to accomplish a purpose. Common examples include trade associations, trade unions, learned society, learned societies, professional associations, and environmental movement, environmental groups. All such associations reflect freedom of association in ultimate terms (members may choose whether to join or leave), although membership is not necessarily voluntary in the sense that one's employment may effectively require it via occupational closure. Book collecting is the collecting of books, including seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining whatever books are of interest to a given collector. The love of books is ''bibliophilia'', and someone who loves to read, admire, and a person who collects books is often called a ''bibliophile'' but can also be known as an ''bibliolater'', meaning being overly devoted to books, or a ''bookman'' which is another term for a person who has a love of books. Frank Newfeld FGDC is a book designer, illustrator, art director and educator. Newfeld is arguably the greatest book designer of the 20th century in Canada. He has designed over 650 books and won more than 170 international awards. He is a former Vice-President of Publishing at McClelland & Stewart, Head of the Illustration Program at Sheridan College and Co-founder/President of the Society of Typographic Designers of Canada (now the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada - GDC). Jim Rimmer
Jim Rimmer (April 1, 1934 – January 9, 2010) was a Canadian graphic designer, letterpress printer, proprietor of the Pie Tree Press and is especially notable as a designer of typefaces. Biography Jim Rimmer was born on 1 April 1934 and was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He attended Vancouver Technical School, "which gave an introduction to metal type and presses through the school's large printing trade shop." After an apprenticeship he began a long period of working with type and design for newspaper publication and printing, all in British Columbia. Rimmer attended evening classes to study graphic design at Vancouver School of Art. Glenn Goluska
Glenn Goluska (1947–2011) was a Canadian book designer and typographer. He was born on June 26, 1947, in Chicago and came to Canada as a student at the University of Toronto. After graduating he worked for some time in the United States before returning to Canada to work at Coach House Press. Stan Bevington is a Canadian book publisher who founded Coach House Books. Robert Bringhurst Appointments to the Order of Canada (2013). (born 16 October 1946) is a Canadian poet, typographer and author. He has translated substantial works from Haida and Navajo and from classical Greek and Arabic.
