Akali Tange Association Inc is a human rights focused landowner's association based in Porgera, Papua New Guinea that advocates for community interests where multinational mines operate. Organisation Membership includes the relatives of more than twenty deceased "illegal miners" who have been killed near the ''Porgera Joint Venture.'' In 2006, the organisation's Executive Officer was Jethro Tulin, and as of 2017, it was McDiyan Robert Yapari. History In April 2005 Akali Tange published ''The Shooting Fields of Porgera Joint Venture'' documenting allegations of ongoing assaults and murders of local residents by the security contractors of Porgera Gold Mine. They shared the 163 page report with MiningWatch Canada. Catherine Coumans of MiningWatch Canada described the report as gruesome and credible. Porgera Gold Mine
The Porgera Gold Mine is a large gold and silver mining operation in near Porgera, Enga province, Papua New Guinea (PNG), located at the head of the Porgera Valley. The mine is situated in the rain forest covered highlands at an altitude of 2,200 to 2,700 m, in a region of high rainfall, landslides, and frequent earthquakes. The Porgera Gold Mine is operated by the Porgera Joint Venture (PJV). Porgera Gold Mine is the second largest mine in Papua New Guinea and is regarded as one of the world's top ten producing gold mines. In 2009, it produced 572,595 ounces of gold and 94,764 ounces of silver and had 2,500 employees and 500 contractors. Since it began operating, the mine has produced more than 16 million ounces of gold and almost 3 million ounces of silver, accounting for about 12 percent of Papua New Guinea's total exports. Porgera Landowners Association
The Porgera Landowners Association ( PLOA) was formed in the late 1980s and incorporated in 1992. Its objectives are to represent the 10,000 landowners with traditional land around the Porgera Gold Mine and serve as a pressure group on behalf of the landowners, and to pursue landowner claims in the courts in Port Moresby. The PLOA is funded by royalties from the mine, so that the mine pays for the institution established to oppose it. Porgera Gold Mine was built by Vancouver-based Placer Dome, and began operations in 1990. It is one of the world's top ten gold mines, producing over 16 million ounces up to 2009. The mine, which is operated by Porgera Joint Venture (PJV), has been 95% owned by Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corporation following Barrick's takeover of Placer Dome in 2006.
