Advance (album)
''Advance'' is the second studio album by British electronic music duo LFO, released 29 January 1996 by Warp. The album peaked at number 44 on the UK Albums charts and was the final album to feature Gez Varley before he left the group shortly after its release. ''Advance'' was followed up with ''Sheath'' in 2003 with only contributions from Bell. Production After the release of their album '' Frequencies'' (1991), rumors of LFO's follow-up was discussed from time to time without any new material being released. AllMusic described the album as "Nearly legendary as the album-that-almost-never-happened, ''Advance'' was a full five years in the making, with hardly a peep of new material in between." The album was produced by Mark Bell. LFO (British Band)
LFO was a British electronic music act formed in 1988 consisting of Mark Bell and Gez Varley. They released their acclaimed debut LP ''Frequencies'' in 1991 on Sheffield label Warp. After Varley left the group in 1996, Bell continued solo to release '' Advance'' (1996) and ''Sheath'' (2003). Bell died in October 2014, effectively ending the project. LFO are considered to be pioneers of the bass-heavy "bleep techno" style. AllMusic called them "one of British techno's most important, agenda-setting groups." History Early years Varley and Bell met while studying at Leeds and named their group after the initialism for the common synthesizer function low-frequency oscillation. ''Muzik'' was a British dance music magazine published by IPC Media from June 1995 to August 2003. ''Muzik'' was created by two former '' Melody Maker'' journalists, Push and Ben Turner. Push was the editor of ''Muzik'' from its launch until he left the magazine in 1998, at which point Turner took over as editor. The title was subsequently edited by Conor McNicholas, who went on to edit '' NME''. Aimed at serious dance music fans rather than weekend clubbers, ''Muzik''s writers included a number of well-known DJs, including Kris Needs, Rob da Bank, Spoony, Terry Farley, Bob Jones, Jonty Skrufff and Dave Mothersole. Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode are an English electronic music band formed in Basildon, Essex, in 1980. The band currently consists of Dave Gahan (lead vocals and co-songwriting) and Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, co-lead vocals and main songwriting). Depeche Mode, originally formed by the lineup of Gahan, Gore, Andy Fletcher and Vince Clarke, released their debut album '' Speak & Spell'' in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. After founding member Clarke left following the release of the album, they recorded '' A Broken Frame'' as a trio. Leftfield are a British electronic music duo formed in 1989 as the duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley (the latter formerly of the Rivals and A Man Called Adam). The duo was very influential in the evolution of electronic music in the 1990s, with ''Mixmag'' describing them as "the single most influential production team working in British dance music". As with many of their contemporaries, such as the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, Leftfield are notable for their use of guest vocalists in their works. Mark Pritchard (born 1971) is an English electronic musician, currently signed to Warp. He has produced a large discography with a constant change of styles and genres, in both solo work under various aliases, and collaborations. History Mark Pritchard was born in Yeovil in Somerset, England in 1971. From an early age he listened to a wide range of musical styles, and says when he was 5 his mother would buy him a new 7" record every week. After spending his school years listening to ska, 2-tone, indie and rock, he eventually became involved in club music, specifically Detroit techno and Chicago house. In the clubs of Taunton he came into contact with fellow West Country residents Tom Middleton and Richard D. James.
