''Adrienne Lecouvreur'' () is a French tragic play written by Ernest Legouvé and Eugène Scribe. It portrays the life of the leading French actress of the eighteenth century Adrienne Lecouvreur and her mysterious death. It was produced April 14, 1849. Adaptations In 1902 the play was used as the basis for the libretto of the opera ''Adriana Lecouvreur'' by Francesco Cilea and Arturo Colautti. It was also the basis of the operetta ''Adrienne'' with music by Walter W. Goetze, produced in Hamburg in 1926. There have been a number of film versions of the play including '' Dream of Love'' (1928) an American film starring Joan Crawford and ''Adrienne Lecouvreur'' (1938) a Franco-German co-production directed by Marcel L'Herbier and starring Yvonne Printemps. Valentina Cortese
Valentina Cortese (1 January 1923 – 10 July 2019) was an Italian actress. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in François Truffaut's ''Day for Night'' (1973). Personal life Cortese was born in Milan to a family from Stresa, Piedmont. In 1940, she met conductor Victor de Sabata, who was 31 years older and married with children. She left high school to follow him to Rome, and there she graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Art. They separated in 1948. Cortese married Richard Basehart, her co-star in '' The House on Telegraph Hill'', in 1951, and had one son with him, the actor Jackie Basehart; they divorced in 1960. She never remarried. Jackie Basehart died in Milan in 2015, predeceasing Cortese. Cortese died on 10 July 2019, aged 96. The film was a co-production between the two countries, and was made at UFA's Berlin Studios. Fred Niblo (born Frederick Liedtke; January 6, 1874 – November 11, 1948) was an American pioneer film actor, director and producer. Biography He was born Frederick Liedtke (several sources give "Frederico Nobile", apparently erroneously) in York, Nebraska to a French mother and a father who had served as a captain in the American Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. Using the stage name Fred Niblo, Liedtke began his show business career performing in vaudeville and in live theater. After more than 20 years doing live performing as a monologist, during which he traveled extensively around the globe, he worked in Australia from 1912 through 1915, where he turned to the burgeoning motion picture industry and made his first two films.
