A For Andromeda
''A for Andromeda'' is a British television science fiction drama serial first made and broadcast by the BBC in seven parts in 1961. Written by cosmologist Fred Hoyle, in conjunction with author and television producer John Elliot, it concerns a group of scientists who detect a radio signal from another galaxy that contains instructions for the design of an advanced computer. When the computer is built, it gives the scientists instructions for the creation of a living organism named Andromeda, but one of the scientists, John Fleming, fears that Andromeda's purpose is to subjugate humanity. The serial was the first major role for the actress Julie Christie. Only one episode of the original production survives, along with a few short extracts from other episodes. Michael Hayes (director)
Michael Hayes (3 April 1929 – 16 September 2014) was a British television director and newsreader. He was born in Barking in Essex. As a young man, Hayes was an actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Later he worked for the BBC in various roles, beginning as a studio manager for the World Service, and working his way up to directing for television. Perhaps his most notable work was directing the hugely successful BBC drama adaptations of various Shakespeare plays, collectively entitled ''An Age of Kings'', in 1960. Like many TV drama professionals, after retirement he became better remembered for his work in television science fiction. Stellar nucleosynthesis is the creation (nucleosynthesis) of chemical elements by nuclear fusion reactions within stars.
