AFL Under-19 Championships
The AFL Under-19 Championships (for sponsorship reasons, the NAB AFL Under-19 Championships) is an annual Australian national underage representative championship in Australian rules football tournament. It is seen as one of the main pathways towards being drafted into a team in the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). The National Championships grew out of the Teal Cup which began in 1953 as a junior representative competition between the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales. It was rebranded in 1976 to reflect its expansion to include teams from each Australian state and mainland territory, rotated between host cities. In the absence of a national league, and less regular senior competition, it grew into one of the most important competitions in the country. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The league currently consists of 18 teams spread over five of Australia's six states (Tasmania being the exception). Matches have been played in all states, plus the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, as well as in New Zealand and China to expand the league's audience. Michael Phyland
Michael Phyland (born 29 September 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Sydney Swans in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Phyland represented New South Wales at Under 18 Championships in 1982 and won the Larke Medal. He played four seasons for the Swans and made a total of 22 appearances. Paul Salmon
Paul Salmon (born 20 January 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the Australian Football League for Essendon and Hawthorn. Recruited from North Ringwood, Salmon had a prolific career, with many accolades such as being inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame, a two-time premiership player, seven-time leading goalkicker at Essendon, and the fourth-highest goalkicker for Essendon. Mark Weideman
Mark Weideman (born 30 December 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Weideman was just 16 when he made his senior debut for South Australian National Football League (SANFL) club West Adelaide in 1978. His father, Murray Weideman, had coached the club earlier in the decade, after an 11-year career at Collingwood. Weideman followed in his father's footsteps and played 28 games for Collingwood over four seasons. He played 20 of those games in his debut season in 1981, which included their preliminary final win over Geelong, but he wasn't selected in the Grand Final team, his spot taken by captain Peter Moore, who was returning from injury.
