AFL Canberra
AFL Canberra is the name of the local governing body for and premier competition of Australian rules football in the Australian Capital Territory (and the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales). It acts as an umbrella to several competitions beneath it. These competitions are Seniors First Grade, Seniors Second Grade, Thirds, Fourths and a Rising Stars League. A women's league, the Australian Capital Territory Women's Australian Football League operates separately though most AFL Canberra clubs also field women's teams. History The league was founded as the Federal Territory Australian Rules Football League in 1924 with founding members Acton and Queanbeyan. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. Greater Western Sydney Giants
The Greater Western Sydney Giants (officially the Greater Western Sydney Football Club and colloquially known as the GWS Giants or simply GWS) are a professional Australian rules football team based in Sydney Olympic Park, which represents the Greater Western Sydney region of New South Wales and Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The Giants compete in the Australian Football League (AFL), and entered the league in 2012 as the competition's 18th active club. Queanbeyan Football Club
The Queanbeyan Tigers Australian Football Club, nicknamed the Tigers, is an Australian rules football club that competes in the AFL Canberra. The club is based in Queanbeyan, one of the oldest (proclaimed a town in 1838) and fastest growing municipalities (proclaimed a city in 1972) in New South Wales, that draws players, supporters and administrators from a region of 100,000 people covering the Division of Eden-Monaro. History Affiliation The team was affiliated with Federal Territory Football League in 1925–26. Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
Gungahlin Enclosed Oval is a multi-use stadium located in the north Canberra region of Gungahlin, Australian Capital Territory. It is the home ground for Gungahlin United, Gungahlin Jets, Gungahlin Bulls and Gungahlin Eagles. The venue has a seating capacity of 1,150 people and an overall capacity of 5,000. Stadium Facilities The playing surface is made of high quality, water-efficient turf and is lit to the Australian Standard for sporting competition. The grandstand provides seating for 1,150 people, of which 550 is under cover, and includes team and officials' changing rooms, public toilets, canteen and storage for both users and maintenance staff. Gungahlin Football Club
Gungahlin Jets Australian Football and Netball Club is an Australian sports club based in Gungahlin, Australian Capital Territory. The Australian rules football squad competes in the AFL Canberra first grade competition. The club has also a netball section. History The Gungahlin Jets were established in 1981 and entered the Monaro AFL division 2 competition in 1982. The club won the MAFL division 2 premiership in their first season. In 2014, the Abbott government, Liberal government withdrew a $66,000 grant for infrastructure funding provided by the previous Rudd Government (2013), Labor government, sparking a controversy. Canberra Football Club
The Canberra Demons (formerly known as the Eastlake Football Club) is a semi-professional Australian rules football club based in the inner-south of Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. The senior team competed in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) from the league's founding in 2011 until it was absorbed by the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 2021. Canberra declined to join the expanded VFL. In January 2016, the league announced that Eastlake would rebrand and now be known as Canberra, though the Eastlake name would live on in local competitions. The Belconnen Magpies Football Club is an Australian rules football club which competes in the AFL Canberra. They previously played in the now defunct North East Australian Football League competition. History Originally known as the Turner Football Club, the club became known as Belconnen in 1970 and was admitted to the Canberra Australian National Football League in 1971. Wearing a navy blue guernsey with a white monogram, the club was known as the "Bees" from 1971 until 1979, then as the "Blues" following the ANU Blues' withdrawal from the league during 1979. Before the 1986 season, the Belconnen club merged with the West Canberra Football Club to become the "Belconnen Magpies".
