Tovuz District
Tovuz District () is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the north-west of the country and belongs to the Gazakh-Tovuz Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Gadabay, Shamkir, Samukh, Agstafa, as well as the Tavush Province of Armenia and Kakheti region of Georgia. Its capital and largest city is Tovuz. As of 2020, the district had a population of 177,200. A major train line runs through the center, stopping at Tovuz Station. In July 2020, Tovuz became the main site for the clashes with Armenia. Yusif Sadykhov
Yusif Madat oglu Sadykhov (Azerbaijani: Yusif Mədət oğlu Sadıqov; 1918 – 11 June 1971) was an Azerbaijani Red Army Starshina and Hero of the Soviet Union. Sadykhov was a gun commander in an artillery battalion and was awarded the title for his actions during the Vistula–Oder Offensive. In the offensive, he was credited with knocking out several German armored vehicles and suppressing firing positions, enabling the creation of a bridgehead. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to Tovuz, becoming director of an oil depot. Early life Sadykhov was born in 1918 in the village of Ağdam to a peasant family. He received secondary education and afterwards worked as a farmhand. In 1938, he was drafted into the Red Army. World War II Sadykhov fought in combat from February 1942. The title Hero of the Soviet Union () was the highest distinction in the Soviet Union, awarded together with the Order of Lenin personally or collectively for heroic feats in service to the Soviet state and society. The title was awarded both to civilian and military persons. Overview The award was established on 16 April 1934, by the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union. The first recipients of the title originally received only the Order of Lenin, the highest Soviet award, along with a certificate (грамота, ''gramota'') describing the heroic deed from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Because the Order of Lenin could be awarded for deeds not qualifying for the title of hero, and to distinguish heroes from other Order of Lenin holders, the Gold Star medal was introduced on 1 August 1939. Naig Yusifov
Naig Yusifov () (5 January 1970 – 24 March 1992) was an Azerbaijani soldier and National Hero of Azerbaijan who was killed during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Biography Naig Yusifov was born on 5 January 1970 in the village of Agdam in the Tovuz District. In 1987, after graduating from high school, he was called to serve in the Soviet Army. During the period of Naig's military service, there was a tense situation at the borders of Azerbaijan with Armenia; the border regions with Armenia were almost uncontrolled. Since the National Army was not yet created at that time, only local self-defense battalions were overseeing the area. After completing his military service in the Soviet Army, he joined a self-defense battalion in the village.
