''The Year of Maria'' () is a 2000 Spanish black comedy film directed by Karra Elejalde and Fernando Guillén Cuervo, who also star in the film alongside Manuel Manquiña, Gloria Muñoz (actress), Gloria Muñoz, and Sílvia Bel. Plot Mariano, an alcoholic Cassette tape, cassette salesman, crashes on a Cannabis cultivation, marijuana plantation being burned by Guardia Civil (Spain), Guardia Civil agents, so dazed and hallucinated by narcotics, he sees the Virgin Mary. With help from a middling showman (Tony Towers) he becomes a messiah, messianic figure in rural southern Spain. Cast Production The film was produced by Asegarce with the collaboration of Televisión Española, TVE, , and EiTB, ETB. Shooting locations in the province of Almería included Cala Carbón (Níjar). Release Distributed by Aurum, the film was released theatrically in Spain on 11 August 2000. Fernando Guillén Cuervo
Fernando Guillén Cuervo (born March 11, 1963) is a Spanish actor, film director and scriptwriter. Biography Born on March 11, 1963, in Barcelona in a family of thespians to father Fernando Guillén (actor), Fernando Guillén and mother Gemma Cuervo. Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, Cayetana (also an actress) and Natalia are his siblings. He featured as a child actor in the television series ''La saga de los Rius'' (1976–1977). He began his professional career in theatre, working as an assistant stage director at the Madrid's . He made his feature film debut as a director in the 2000 film ', which he co-directed alongside Karra Elejalde. He co-wrote the script of the 2002 film ''Bulgarian Lovers'' alongside Eloy de la Iglesia, adapting the novel ''Los novios búlgaros'' by Eduardo Mendicutti.
