Ayşe Işıl Karakaş
Ayşe Işıl Karakaş (8 December 1958 – 24 January 2024) was a Turkish academic, professor of law, and former judge at the European Court of Human Rights in respect of the Republic of Turkey. Career In 1983, she graduated from the Department of Political Science of Istanbul University, and between 1984 and 1993, she worked as a research assistant in the same institution. In 1986, she gained her first master's degree in Public Law, Istanbul University. In 1986, she gained her second master's degree in the field of European Law at the Centre Européen Universitaire at the Nancy 2 University, Nancy II University. In 1990, Karakaş graduated from the Faculty of Law of Marmara University, and was admitted to the Istanbul Bar Association in 1990. Muhammed Fethullah Gülen (27 April 1941 – 20 October 2024) was a Turkish Ulama, Muslim scholar, preacher, and leader of the Gülen movement who as of 2016 had millions of followers. Gülen was an influential Neo-Ottomanism, neo-Ottomanist, Anatolian Panethnicity, panethnicist, Islamic poet, writer, social critic, and activist–dissident developing a Said Nursî, Nursian theological perspective that embraces democratic modernity. Turkish women in academics refers to Turkish women who make scientific research or teach in the universities in Turkey and abroad. Background During the Ottoman Empire era women had no chance to teach in the universities except for the very last years of the empire when Committee of Union and Progress (İttihat ve Terakki Partisi) came to power. The first Turkish woman who was able to teach in Istanbul University (then known as Darülfunun) was Halide Edib (later Halide Edib Adıvar) in 1918. But Halide Edib chose to join the nationalist forces of Mustafa Kemal (later Atatürk) in Anatolia rather than to stay in Istanbul. During the Republican era the number of academics increased.
