Axel Proet Høst
Axel Proet Høst (1907 – 1985) was a Norwegian sports official. He was president of the Norwegian Boxing Association from 1938 to 1949. He was president of the Norwegian Confederation of Sports from 1961 to 1965. He served as høyesterettssakfører (high court lawyer) in Horten, in southern Norway. During World War II, he was a leader of the local resistance to the Nazi occupation, then narrowly escaped to Britain to continue the fight, while the occupiers imprisoned his wife. The Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports ( NIF), commonly known as the Norwegian Sports Confederation () is the umbrella organization for sport in Norway. It is the largest volunteering organization in Norway, with more than 2 million members and 12,000 sports clubs in 19 region confederations and 54 national federations. The current president is Zaineb Al-Samarai. History The organisation was founded in 1861 as ''Centralforeningen for Udbredelse af Legemsøvelser og Vaabenbrug'', and has later changed its name several times. The current name dates from 2007. The ''Great Norwegian Encyclopedia'' (, abbreviated ''SNL'') is a Norwegian-language online encyclopedia. It has several subdivisions, including the Norsk biografisk leksikon. The online encyclopedia is among the most-read Norwegian published sites, with up to 3.5 million unique visitors per month. Paper editions (1978–2007) The ''SNL'' was created in 1978, when the two publishing houses Aschehoug and Gyldendal merged their encyclopedias and created the company Kunnskapsforlaget. Up until 1978 the two publishing houses of Aschehoug and Gyldendal, Norway's two largest, had published ' and ', respectively. The respective first editions were published in 1906–1913 (Aschehoug) and 1933–1934 (Gyldendal). The slump in sales of paper-based encyclopedias around the turn of the 21st century hit Kunnskapsforlaget hard, but a fourth edition of the paper encyclopedia was secured by a grant of ten million Norwegian kroner from the foundation Fritt Ord in 2003. Arthur Ruud (7 November 1905 – 29 September 1974) was a Norwegian civil servant, trade unionist and sports official. He chaired the trade union ''Norsk Telegraf- og Telefonforbund'' from 1930 to 1949. He was a leader of Arbeidernes Idrettsforbund from 1935 to 1939, and of the Norwegian Confederation of Sports from 1948 to 1951.
