Axel (name)
Axel (also ''Aksel'') is a Scandinavian, German language, German, French language, French, and Dutch language, Dutch masculine given name. In Estonia, Denmark, and Norway the spelling Aksel is more common. The Finnish form of the name is Akseli, while a French language, French feminine form is Axelle. Because the Danish archbishop Absalon (1128–1201) was also known as "Axel of Lund", the name has been interpreted as a corruption of the Hebrew name Absalom. ''Axel'' arose via ''Axelen'' from ''Absalon'', possibly by conflation with the existing names Eskil (other), Askel and Askil, medieval forms of the Old Norse name ''Ásketill'', from ''Æsir, ans'' "god" and ''kjell, ketill'' "cauldron/helmet".''Också förväxlingar mellan Askil och Absalon samt Askil och Asgut har skett i fda. Om man nu vill hänvisa till rundanskans askil — i rundanskan finns således formen — borde man ha skrivit 'Fda. Eskil', ty det är i denna spalt man finner askil.''En dat is waar. ''Namn ...

Axle
An axle or axletree is a central shaft for a rotation, rotating wheel and axle, wheel or gear. On wheeled vehicles, the axle may be fixed to the wheels, rotating with them, or fixed to the vehicle, with the wheels rotating around the axle. In the former case, bearing (mechanical), bearings or Bushing (bearing), bushings are provided at the mounting points where the axle is supported. In the latter case, a bearing or bushing sits inside a central hole in the wheel to allow the wheel or gear to rotate around the axle. Sometimes, especially on bicycles, the latter type of axle is referred to as a ''spindle (tool), spindle''. Terminology On cars and trucks, several senses of the word ''axle'' occur in casual usage, referring to the shaft itself, its housing, or simply any transverse pair of wheels. Strictly speaking, a shaft that rotates with the wheel, being either Bolt (fastener), bolted or rotating spline, splined in fixed relation to it, is called an ''axle'' or ''axle shaft ...

Axel, Netherlands
Axel is a city in the southwest Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Terneuzen, Zeeland, about 31 km southeast of Vlissingen. Axel received city rights in 1213. History The city was first established between 987 and 994 as Axla. The etymology is unclear. Axel was located on the former creek Axelse Gat which had its mouth in the former Braakman inlet. A church was built around 1100, and a castle around 1200. It was a gateway to Ghent, and received city rights in 1213. The city was plundered around 1380 and in 1452 by Ghent. The All Saints' Flood of 1570 resulted in Axel finding itself on an island. Axel was conquered by Maurice, Prince of Orange in 1586 and was fortified. In 1601, eight bastions and one ravelin were constructed around the city. Axel was a strategically important place, because it controlled access to Antwerp and Ghent which were in Spanish hands. In 1789, Axel was reattached to the mainland. The fortifications were removed in 1816. In 1851 ...
