Australian Football Around The World
Australian rules football is played in more than 60 countries around the world with approximately 1.4 million players worldwide. By 2017 more than 26 nations (excluding Australia) had contested the Australian Football International Cup, the highest level of worldwide competition. The AFL Commission is the world governing body which manages international competition through its International Development Committee headed by Andrew Dillon. There are 3 regional governing bodies affiliated to the AFL: AFL Asia, AFL South Pacific and AFL Europe. Australia is the only country with professional teams, now located in every state. However it is strongest (by participation rate and overall interest) in the Australian states and territories of the Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania. Australian Rules Football In The Australian Capital Territory
In the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Australian rules football is a popular spectator and participation sport which has been played continuously since 1911. With 9,129 adult and 2,953 children playing the sport, it has the fourth highest team sport participation after soccer, basketball and netball. The current governing body is AFL Canberra founded 1922 which runs the competition by the same name, while the development body is AFL NSW/ACT established in 1999. The ACT debuted at representative level in 1925 against New South Wales but has not appeared since 1988. Its first win came in 1941 against New South Wales; it also went on to defeat Queensland and the National Amateur team numerous times between the 1950s and 1980s culminating in defeats of the powerhouses of the VFL in 1980 and Tasmania in 1981. Australian Football Hall Of Fame
The Australian Football Hall of Fame was established in 1996, the 1996 AFL season, centenary year of the Australian Football League, to help recognise the contributions made to the sport of Australian rules football by players, umpires, media personalities, coaches and administrators. The initial intake included 136 inductees, with twelve awarded Legend status. As of 2025, this figure has grown to more than 300, including 33 Legends. South Australian goal kicking star Ken Farmer became the most recent inductee to be elevated to Legend status in 2025. Australian Rules Football In Fiji
The sport of Australian rules football has been played in Fiji since at least 1963, when an exhibition was held in Suva. Fiji has produced several professional players for the Australian Football League, however organised Australian rules did not begin there until 2009. The governing body for the sport on the islands is AFL Fiji, created in 2009. Fiji's national teams include the junior team which debuted in the 2005 Oceania Cup (which Fiji has the designated host country for most of the tournamen'ts history), men's team which debuted internationally at the 2011 Australian Football International Cup (where they were crowned Division 2 champions) and the women's at the 2014 Australian Football International Cup. Clubs have begun in most Asian countries and a governing body for the region, AFL Asia was formed in 2008 to coordinate the Asian Championship and promote its affiliated leagues.
