Auseklis Limbaži Theatre
Auseklis Limbaži Theatre (), founded in 1884, is one of the oldest amateur theatres in Latvia. It is based in the city of Limbaži and is named after the pen name of Latvian poet Miķelis Krogzemis. In 1884 under the wing of the Community Club a troupe came together and on December 16, 1884, performed two short plays. But already in the summer of 1887 they did Ādolfs Alunāns' John Neiland. At that time the Theatre would stage two or three plays each year, they did open-air shows, theatrical parades with approximately a hundred participants. Theatre shows were a significant event in the town and the nearest parishes. The Theatre had such professional directors as Kristaps Linde, Vilis Abrams, Augusts Gulbis. During the time prior to World War II the directors were focusing mostly on Latvian drama, they staged about four large scale productions every year. They toured around the neighbouring parishes. Limbaži
Limbaži (, , , ) is a town in the Vidzeme region of northern Latvia, with a population of 6,888. Limbaži is located 90 km northeast of the capital Riga. During the Middle Ages, as part of Livonia, Limbaži was a fortified town with stone walls, second in importance only to Riga. Etymology The name is believed to be a Latvianised version (hence the ''-aži'' ending) of the Livonian word ''Lembsel'' (''Lemesel'') meaning "wide isle in a forest swamp". The German ''Lemsahl'' (''Lemsal'') is derived from the Livonian name. According to folk etymology, the name ''Limbaži'' originated sometime in the 17th century. A recently arrived Swedish minister overheard the words "Limba" and "āži" (Latvian for ' male goats'). Mistakenly, he assumed this was the name of the place, and so the town was called "Limbaži". Miķelis Krogzemis
Miķelis Krogzemis (18 September 1850, Ungurpils – 6 February 1879, Saint Petersburg, Russia), better known by his pen name Auseklis* was a poet from the Russian Empire who wrote in Latvian and prominent member of the Young Latvians movement. Biography Miķelis Krogzemis was born in Sīpoli, Ungurpils to a peasant family. He attended parochial school in Aloja, Latvia, Aloja and later in Ērgļi. In Ērgļi, he met members of the Jurjāni family, who got him in touch with the Young Latvian movement. In 1868, he was admitted to the teachers' seminary in Valka under the leadership of Latvian composer Jānis Cimze. While in Valka, he studied European literature and philosophy of the Age of Enlightenment. After graduating in 1871, Krogzemis begin his teaching career in Jaunpiebalga, but was soon forced to leave the school due to conflicts with the local pastor. Ādolfs Alunāns
Adolfs Alunāns (11 October 1848 – 5 July 1912) was a Latvian actor, director and playwright. For his efforts and hard work in progressing Latvian Dramaturgy he received the title "father of Latvian theater". In 1968, the Jelgava's Adolf Alunans memorial museum was built. Childhood Adolfs Alunāns was born in Jelgava, a town in Russian Empire (in present-day Latvia). His parents were Peter Alunāns, a well-known Latvian journalist, and Otilia Alunāne, daughter of the mayor of Jelgava. In youth Alunāns went to the Academia Petrina gymnasium and in his free time was strictly schooled by his uncle Juris Alunāns (a famous Latvian poet). Friedrich Dürrenmatt
Friedrich Dürrenmatt (; 5 January 1921 – 14 December 1990) was a Swiss author and dramatist. He was a proponent of epic theatre whose plays reflected the recent experiences of World War II. The politically active author's work included avant-garde dramas, philosophical crime novels, and macabre satire. Dürrenmatt was a member of the Gruppe Olten, a group of left-wing Swiss writers who convened regularly at a restaurant in the city of Olten. Life Dürrenmatt was born in Konolfingen, canton of Bern, the son of a Protestant pastor. His grandfather, Ulrich Dürrenmatt, was a conservative politician. The family moved to Bern in 1935. Dürrenmatt began studies in philosophy, German philology, and German literature at the University of Zürich in 1941, but moved to the University of Bern after one semester where he also studied natural science. Play Strindberg
''Play Strindberg'' is a comedy play by the Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt, written in 1968 and published in 1969. It is a free adaptation of August Strindberg's '' The Dance of Death'' (1900), using Strindberg's characters. The title is a reference to Jacques Loussier's ''Play Bach'' series of recordings. Sławomir Mrożek
Sławomir Mrożek (29 June 1930 – 15 August 2013) was a Polish dramatist, writer and cartoonist. Mrożek joined the Polish United Workers' Party during the reign of Stalinism in the People's Republic of Poland, and made a living as a political journalist. He began writing plays in the late 1950s. His theatrical works belong to the genre of absurdist fiction, intended to shock the audience with non-realistic elements, political and historic references, distortion, and parody.
