Aufstehen
Aufstehen (German: ''Stand up'') is a left-wing collective movement founded by politician Sahra Wagenknecht in 2018. Its co-founders and participants included leading members of Germany's left-oriented parties as well as supporters from science and the arts. Their aims were to exert pressure on German political parties and to bring about a shift to the left in politics and society. This included focusing on the issues concerning voters lost to new right-wing movements which have recently emerged in German politics. Inspirations for the movement included Jean-Luc Mélenchon's movement La France Insoumise and Momentum, the organisation founded in support of the British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn. After Wagenknecht withdrew from the leadership of the movement in March 2019 and a number of its other notable figures subsequently turned away from it, the initiative became less prominent. Sahra Wagenknecht
Sahra Wagenknecht (; 16 July 1969) is a German politician. She was a member of the Bundestag from 2009 to 2025, where she represented The Left until 2023. From 2015 to 2019, she served as that party's parliamentary co-chair. With a small team of allies, Wagenknecht left the party on 23 October 2023 to found her own Eurosceptic, populist party in 2024, Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht, which unsuccessfully contested the 2025 federal election, failing to gain a single seat. Since 2025 she no longer holds any public office. Wagenknecht became a prominent member of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) from the early 1990s. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice ( , BSW) is a political party in Germany founded on 8 January 2024. It has been described as a left-wing to far-left party with populist and nationalist tendencies. The BSW is sceptical of green politics, criticises support for Ukraine in the Russo-Ukrainian War, and holds Eurosceptic and anti-American views on foreign policy. The party is considered "left-conservative" or "left-authoritarian", as it combines economically socialist values with cultural conservatism and social conservatism on social issues. Wolfgang Streeck (; born 27 October 1946) is a German economic sociologist and emeritus director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne. Early life Streeck was born "just outside Münster", the son of refugees – ethnic Germans from eastern Europe displaced at the end of the Second World War. His mother was a Sudeten German from Czechoslovakia. Streeck studied sociology at the Goethe University Frankfurt and pursued graduate studies in the same discipline at Columbia University between 1972 and 1974. Simone Lange (born 24 October 1976) is a German politician of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) who served as Mayor of Flensburg from 2017 to 2023. Early life and career Lange grew up in Rudolstadt and completed her Abitur in 1995. After completing a polytechnic degree in 1998 (Dipl.-Verwaltungsfachwirtin (police division)), she was employed at the criminal investigation department in Flensburg from 1999 until 2012.
