The position of Attorney General of the Maldives was created in 1932 under Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen III. It is responsible in upholding the law within a secure and a peace environment and defend the public interest In social science and economics, public interest is "the welfare or well-being of the general public" and society. While it has earlier philosophical roots and is considered to be at the core of democratic theories of government, often paired .... He is also designated as a member of the Cabinet of the Maldives. From 2014 to 2016, the Attorney General's office was part of the Ministry of Law and Gender, with Attorney General Mohamed Anil in charge of the ministry. Azima Shukoor was the longest serving Attorney General since 1993. Ahmed Usham
Ahmed Usham is a Maldivian politician and lawyer who is serving as the Attorney General of the Maldives since 2023. Earlier, he served as Deputy Solicitor General at the Attorney General's Office, and as Deputy Attorney General. He currently serving as the Maldives National Party's (MNP) Vice President. Early life and education Usham graduated the University of the West of England with a Bachelor of Law. Career Usham became a Deputy Solicitor General on 15 November 2011 during the Nasheed administration. He was later appointed to Deputy Attorney General by President Waheed where he stayed for 6 years before resigning on 3 January 2019. He joined the Maldives National Party in 2019 and became the Vice President of the party, he also became the MP for Villimalé constituency, where he later resigned to become the incumbent Attorney General being appointed by President Muizzu.
