Atlético Independiente
Atlético Independiente is a Honduran soccer club based on Siguatepeque, Honduras. The club currently plays in Liga de Ascenso de Honduras. History Club Atlético Independiente was founded on October 12, 1960, by Luis Méndez and Julio Zepeda. The club originally played in Liga de Fútbol “Amado Sánchez”, an independent league in Siguatepeque, until 1979, when the club was promoted to Segunda Division (now called Liga de Ascenso). Since 1979, Atlético Independiente has been one of the most known and respected clubs in Liga de Ascenso. The club has come close to being promoted to Liga Nacional de Honduras in many occasions, the closest being in 1990, where it lost a playoff game for the final to Tela Timsa. Until 2017, they were the only team to play in every Liga de Ascenso season. They were relegated to Honduran Liga Mayor in June 2017 as they didn't show up at the last game for the ''No relegation match'' against Estrella Roja, thus losing the category automatica ... Siguatepeque
Siguatepeque () is a city and municipality in the Departments of Honduras, Honduran department of Comayagua Department, Comayagua. The city has a population of 79,520 (2023 calculation). History Founded by the Spanish in 1689 as a religious centre for retreats and monastic training, the population of the town grew through the intermarriage of colonists, the indigenous Lenca people, Lencas and the Mexican Nahuatl immigrants. The name Siguatepeque is made up of two words in Nahuatl, ''Cihuatl'': Woman and ''Tepec'':Mount, ''the mount of women''. Siguatepeque is located approximately above the sea level. Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. Liga Mayor de Honduras (Honduran Major League) is the third division of association football, football in Honduras. It is composed of around 200 clubs divided into three different phases. The first phase is composed of local leagues based on municipalities; each league divided in a strategic way considering geography. Champions and runner-ups qualify into separate Departments of Honduras, departmental leagues in a two-headder knock-out format with qualification to the regional tournament at play. The regional tournaments are a final two-headder tournament composed of the departmental league's champions and runner-ups. Each of the five regional champions obtain promotion into Liga de Ascenso de Honduras.
