''Atlantis II'', known as ''Beyond Atlantis'' in North America, is a 1999 graphic adventure game developed and published by Cryo Interactive. The sequel to '' Atlantis: The Lost Tales'', it follows the story of Ten, a mystical being that travels across time to defeat the Bearer of Dark. Players assume the role of Ten and solve puzzles in locations such as Ireland, the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and China. ''Atlantis II'' was a commercial success, with sales of 180,000 units after fewer than two months of release. It ultimately sold 160,000 units in France alone, and became one of distributor Dreamcatcher Interactive's most popular titles in North America. Cryo Interactive Entertainment was a French video game developer, video game development and video game publisher, publishing company founded in 1990, but existing unofficially since 1989 as a developer group under the name Cryo. The company gained recognition for its adventure games, such as the commercially successful titles ''Dune (video game), Dune'', ''Dragon Lore and Atlantis: The Lost Tales,'' along with the Racing game, racing series ''MegaRace''. Loosely inspired by Goethe's ''Faust'', it tells the story of Marcellus Faust and his battle of wills with the demon Mephistopheles. ''Faust'' began development in late 1998. Designed primarily as a cultural object rather than a game, it was Arxel Tribe's second project derived from German Romantic literature, following ''Ring''. The team's goal was to make a unique, transgressive adventure for adults, with the episodic structure of a television series such as ''The Twilight Zone'' or '' The Kingdom''.
