The men's 1500 metres was an event at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, with the final held on Saturday, December 1, 1956. There were a total number of 37 participants from 22 nations. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Ron Delany of Ireland, the nation's first 1500 metres medal. The silver medalist was Klaus Richtzenhain, the only medalist in the event for the United Team of Germany. John Landy took bronze, Australia's first medal in the event since 1896. László Tábori
László Tábori (July 6, 1931 – May 23, 2018) was a Hungarian middle- and long-distance runner, best known for equalling the 1500 metres world record and placing 4th in that event at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Biography Early career and rise to fame Tábori was born in Košice. Although he had already taken up running in his youth, his serious career only started in the early 1950s under Mihály Iglói, the legendary coach of Tábori's club, Honvéd Budapest. Already part of the world-record-breaking 1953 and 1954 4 x 1500 metres relay teams of Hungary and the Honvéd Budapest club respectively, he exploded to international fame in 1955, together with Iglói's other star pupils, Sándor Iharos and István Rózsavölgyi. Ian Hugh Boyd (born 8 December 1933) is a British middle-distance runner who competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Biography Boyd finished second behind Roger Bannister in the 1 mile event at the 1954 AAA Championships. Shortly afterwards he represented England and won a bronze medal in the 880 yards race at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Canada. After finishing third at the 1956 AAA Championships, he competed in the men's 1500 metres at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. Boyd was awarded the best senior athlete of the year for 1957 by his club, the Herne Hill Harriers. Stanislav Jungwirth (15 August 1930 – 11 April 1986) was a Czechoslovak middle-distance runner. Jungwirth came third in the 1500 metres at the 1954 European Championships and set a world record for the same distance in 1957. Career Jungwirth started training seriously in 1949. By 1951, he was already a quality runner, running the 1500 metres in 3:48.8; ''Track and Field News'' ranked him No. 8 in the world that year. In 1952, he won the Czechoslovak championship at both 800 and 1500 metres and was selected to run the latter distance at the Olympics in Helsinki, where he survived the heats but went out in the semi-finals. Late in October 1952, he set a new world record at 1000 metres in Stará Boleslav, running 2:21.2 to better Olle Åberg's time by 0.1 seconds.
