Athletic Ground, Maidstone
The Athletic Ground was a football ground and later a greyhound racing track in Maidstone. Football Maidstone United Football Club played at the Athletic Ground on the London Road since it had been built way back in 1898 right up until the football club agreed to sell the site for re-development in 1988. Greyhound Racing Greyhound racing was not brought to Maidstone until 1976 following an agreement with Horace Luper and the Maidstone United Football Club. The first meeting was held on Friday 1 October 1976 at 7.35pm. The greyhound operation was organised by H Luper & Associates Greyhounds Ltd and they built a track around the football pitch which was described as having a good running surface and offering distances of 254, 443, 634 and 1,015 metres. Maidstone is the largest Town status in the United Kingdom, town in Kent, England, of which it is the county town. Maidstone is historically important and lies 32 miles (51 km) east-south-east of London. The Select Stakes is a greyhound competition held at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium. It was run at Wembley Stadium from 1952 until 1996. Wembley Stadium (1923)
The original Wembley Stadium (; originally known as the Empire Stadium) was a stadium in Wembley, London, best known for hosting important football matches. It stood on the same site now occupied by its successor. The 1984 Daily Mirror Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 23 June 1984 at White City Stadium. It was the last time that White City held the event due to impending closure. The winner was Whisper Wishes and the winning owner John Duffy received £25,000. The competition was sponsored by the Daily Mirror. Grand National (greyhounds)
The Grand National is an original classic greyhound racing competition held at Crayford Stadium over the hurdles. It was run at White City Stadium from 1928 until 1984, it moved to Hall Green Stadium in 1985 and then on to Wimbledon Stadium in 1999. In 2012, the Greyhound Racing Association allowed the race to leave their portfolio and it switched to Central Park Stadium in Sittingbourne. Central Park held the event until 2022 when it was cancelled in May before Ladbrokes stepped in to sponsor the event which was then held at Crayford for the first time. Greenwich Cup
The Greenwich Cup was a greyhound racing competition held annually from 1946 until 2003. It was inaugurated in 1946 at New Cross Stadium but following the closure of New Cross in 1969 it switched to Charlton Stadium. It only survived two years at Charlton because it also closed and the race found its final home at Catford Stadium in 1972. When the Greyhound Racing Association shut down Catford in 2003 the race was discontinued.
