Before the NCAA was founded and into the early years after its foundation (1924), Ateneo's fiercest basketball rivals were the UP Fighting Maroons (then known as the Maroon and Greens). UAAP Season 71 Men's Basketball Tournament
The UAAP Season 71 men's basketball tournament is the 2008–09 season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Basketball Championship, with University of the Philippines, Diliman as the season host, to coincide with the centennial celebrations of the University of the Philippines System. The Ateneo Blue Eagles swept their archrivals De La Salle Green Archers in two games to clinch their first UAAP title since 2002, and to give head coach Norman Black his first collegiate championship. The UAAP Season 65 men's basketball tournament refers to the men's basketball tournament of UAAP Season 65 (2002–03 season) of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). The tournament was hosted by National University. ABS-CBN covered the games on Studio 23. Four-time defending champion De La Salle Green Archers were on their way on scoring a rare 14–0 sweep of the elimination round when they were stopped by the Ateneo Blue Eagles in their last game of the elimination round. The UE Red Warriors won over the UST Growling Tigers on the elimination round finale to secure the #2 seed against Ateneo in the semifinals. Louie Alas
Francisco Luis "Louie" Evora Alas (born October 10, 1963) is a Filipino basketball coach. He is the head coach of the Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) since 2023 and the deputy assistant coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball team of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) since 2024. Alas was the former head coach of the Letran Knights in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and Philippine Patriots in the ASEAN Basketball League. Alton Lister
Alton Lavelle Lister (born October 1, 1958) is an American former professional basketball player. He is currently serving as an assistant coach for TNT Tropang Giga in the Philippine Basketball Association and the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. Lister graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School (in the Lakewood section of Dallas) in 1976, where he led the Wildcats to many victories and was an All-American and All-State team member. Gene Afable, is a Filipino basketball coach who currently serves as an assistant coach for the Meralco Bolts. Alexander "Sandy" Arespacochaga (born April 6, 1977) is a former collegiate basketball player who currently serves as an assistant coach of Ateneo Blue Eagles, and TNT Tropang 5G. Career Ateneo Arespacocahaga played for the Blue Eagles from 1993 to 1997. He served as the head coach of the team twice, first in 2004, at the age of 29, with Norman Black as its consultant. After Black's reassignment to Talk and Text, and joining him in 2012, Arespacochaga was also a top candidate to be the next head coach, but Bo Perasol was chosen.
