Aten is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Cedar County, Nebraska, Cedar County, Nebraska, United States. Geography Aten is located in northwestern Cedar County, bordered by the Missouri River and the state of South Dakota to the north. Nebraska Highway 121 passes through the community, leading east to U.S. Route 81 in Nebraska, U.S. Route 81 at a point south of Yankton, South Dakota, and west to Gavins Point Dam, which impounds the Missouri River to form Lewis and Clark Lake. History Aten was founded in 1881 and named for postmaster John Aten. A post office was established in Aten in 1882, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. Gavins Point Dam is a long embankment rolled-earth and chalk-fill dam which spans the Missouri River and impounds Lewis and Clark Lake. The dam joins Cedar County, Nebraska with Yankton County, South Dakota a distance of 811.1 river miles (1,305 km) upstream of St. Louis, Missouri, where the river joins the Mississippi River. Yankton is a city in and the county seat of Yankton County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 15,411 at the 2020 census, and it is the principal city of the Yankton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the entirety of Yankton County and which had an estimated population of 23,297 as of July 1, 2021.
