Atalaia, Cape Verde
Atalaia is a settlement in the northern part of the island of Fogo, Cape Verde. Its population was 700 in 2010. It is situated near the coast, 6 km west of Mosteiros and 19 km northeast of the island capital São Filipe. The municipal boundary with São Filipe is to the west. Nearby settlements area Ribeira Ilhéu to the east and Campanas Baixo to the west. The festival of Saint John (''São João'') is celebrated every June 24. Fogo (Portuguese language, Portuguese for "fire") is an island in the Sotavento Islands, Sotavento group of Cape Verde. São Filipe, Cape Verde (municipality)
São Filipe is a ''concelho'' (municipality) of Cape Verde. Situated in the western part of the island of Fogo, it covers 49% of the island area (228.84 km2), and is home to 60% of its population (22,248 at the 2010 census). Its seat is the city São Filipe. Agriculture is the main employment of the municipality, followed by tourism. Subdivisions The municipality consists of two ''freguesias'' (civil parishes): * São Lourenço * Nossa Senhora da Conceição History It was created in 1991, when the older Municipality of Fogo was split in two, the southwestern part becoming the Municipality of São Filipe and the northeastern part becoming the Municipality of Mosteiros. A village is a clustered human settlement or community, larger than a hamlet but smaller than a town (although the word is often used to describe both hamlets and smaller towns), with a population typically ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand. Though villages are often located in rural areas, the term urban village is also applied to certain urban neighborhoods. Villages are normally permanent, with fixed dwellings; however, transient villages can occur.
