Asunción International Marathon
The Asunción International Marathon (), known by its acronym as MIA, is an annual road running event over the marathon distance (42.195 km) which takes place in August in Asunción, Paraguay, since 2010. It's organized by Paraguay Marathon Club and the Paraguayan Athletics Federation, member of World Athletics. Asunción
Asunción (, ) is the capital and the largest city of Paraguay. The city stands on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River, almost at the confluence of this river with the Pilcomayo River. The Paraguay River and the Bay of Asunción in the northwest separate the city from the Occidental Region of Paraguay and from Argentina in the south part of the city. The rest of the city is surrounded by the Central Department. Asunción is one of the oldest cities in South America and the List of oldest continuously inhabited cities#South America, longest continually inhabited area in the Río de la Plata Basin; for this reason it is known as "the Mother of Cities". Marathons In Paraguay
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of kilometres ( 26 mi 385 yd), usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. More than 800 marathons are held worldwide each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. A creation of the French philologist Michel Bréal inspired by a story from Ancient Greece, the marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896 in Athens. The distance did not become standardized until 1921. The distance is also included in the World Athletics Championships, which began in 1983. It is the only running road race included in both championship competitions (walking races on the roads are also contested in both). Sport in Paraguay is an important part of national culture. Association football is the most popular sport, while basketball is also very popular. Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa (born 20 May 1984) is a Kenyan-born Bahraini long-distance runner who specialises in marathon running. Having switched countries in 2013, she is the Bahraini record holder with 2:21:17 hours for the distance, set in 2017 at Nagoya Women's Marathon. She was the silver medallist in the marathon at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. At the start of her career, she represented Kenya at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Athletics over 1,500 metres. She changed to road running and reached the top level of the sport in 2012 after moving up to the marathon distance. Abel Kiprop Mutai (born 2 October 1988) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He was born in Nandi. He won the gold medal at the 2005 World Youth Championships, a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, placed seventh at the 2013 World Championship and finished ninth at the 2009 World Athletics Final. In addition to these, he won the 2000 m steeplechase at the 2007 African Junior Championship. He suffered an Achilles tendon injury which kept him out of competition for all of 2010.
