Assunta Ng
Assunta Ng is Chinese-American community organizer and the publisher of ''Northwest Asian Weekly'' and Seattle Chinese Post, ''Seattle Chinese Pos''t, based in Seattle's Chinatown-International District, Seattle, Chinatown/International District. Biography Ng was born in China and raised in Hong Kong. Ng got her first name, which means ascension, from an Italian priest when she was baptized. In 1971 at age 19, she immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong to attend the University of Washington (UW). Ng wanted to relocate to the U.S. because her parents had low expectations for daughters and Ng did not want to become a housewife, which was what was modeled to her as she was growing up. At that time, she had the perception that only in America could a woman be free. After the first year, Ng supported herself for the rest of her college education. Northwest Asian Weekly
The ''Northwest Asian Weekly'' is an Asian American newspaper based in Seattle, Washington's International District. It was founded in 1983 by Assunta Ng, publisher of the '' Seattle Chinese Post'', and published free weekly editions until January 2023. History ''Northwest Asian Weekly'' published its first edition on February 5, 1983, as the successor to an English insert in the '' Seattle Chinese Post'' that debuted in September 1982. Both newspapers were published by Assunta Ng; among the early supporters of the ''Asian Weekly'' was Gary Locke, who later became the first Asian American governor of Washington. It was distributed for free and had a circulation of 9,500 prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The ''Asian Weekly'' ceased print publication on January 21, 2023, and became an online-only news outlet; the ''Seattle Chinese Post'' also ceased on the same day. The ''Seattle Chinese Post'' ( zh, t=西華報, s=西华报, first=t, p=Xī Huá Bào, j=Sai1 Waa4 Bou3) was a weekly Chinese-language newspaper based in Seattle, Washington's International District. It was founded on 1982 by Assunta Ng, also founder of the ''Northwest Asian Weekly.'' At the time of its founding, it was the first Chinese-language newspaper published in the Pacific Northwest since 1927. History ''The Seattle Chinese Post'' was founded by Assunta Ng. It was given its name in December 1981 by community members in the surrounding International District in an "open-naming" contest. Originally headquartered in the Bush Hotel in the International District, ''The Seattle Chinese Post's'' first issue was published January 20, 1982. The first issue consisted primarily of advertisements because, at the time, Chinese characters had to be manually typed and typesetters used a bulky and noisy tool imported from Taiwan. Jean Walkinshaw
Jean Walkinshaw is an American television producer. She has produced content for The History Channel, KING-TV, and KCTS. In 2019 Walkinshaw was inducted into the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Gold Circle for 50 years of significant contribution to the television industry and community. A graduate of Stanford University, she taught school for three years and in 1963 started her TV career. At KING-TV she produced a weekly series, ''Face to Face'', hosted by Roberta Byrd Barr, which in 1968 was the only local program series in the U.S. to consistently report on attitudes of minority peoples. In 1970 Walkinshaw moved to KCTS where she produced documentaries for both national and local audiences. Much of her work features people and places in the Northwest, but she also produced documentaries in Russia, Ghana and four in Japan.
