Associação Académica de Coimbra, Rugby is one of the leading teams of rugby union in Portugal. It is currently one of Portugal's top 8 clubs and plays in the Super Bock above the 1st Division. The Portuguese Rugby Federation () is the governing body for rugby union in Portugal. It was founded in 1926 and became affiliated to the International Rugby Board in 1988. History The first game of rugby union in Portugal was played in 1903 by British officials against British expats representing Lisbon Football Club. The predecessor union, the Associação de Rugby de Lisboa (English: Association of Rugby in Lisbon) was founded in 1926 by British and French expatriates alongside some local Portuguese players. This would later expand to cover the whole of Portugal with the Portuguese Rugby Federation being established as the national rugby union of Portugal in 1957. The Associação Académica de Coimbra (AAC) is the students' union of the University of Coimbra (UC). Founded in Coimbra on November 3, 1887, it is the oldest students' union in Portugal. It is also the biggest Portuguese students' union belonging to an independent institution, since it represents all the students of its university, who gain automatic membership into the AAC as students of the University of Coimbra (25,580 students as of 2021). In addition to several departments dedicated to culture and student life, ranging from theatre and musical groups to radio and cinematography, the AAC has several sports' departments (called sections) based in Coimbra. All teams and athletes of the AAC sports departments bear the same name and logo with black uniforms. This is one of the largest multi-sports clubs of Portugal. Copa Ibérica De Rugby
The Copa Ibérica de Rugby (''Iberian Rugby Cup'') is a rugby union knock-out competition played annually by clubs of the Spanish Rugby Federation and Portuguese Rugby Federation. It was played for the first time in 1965. Between 1965 and 1971, it was played by 4 clubs (2 of each country, both Champion's and both Runner's-up), that face each other in ligule type competition. The competition stopped being played in 1972, but returned in 1983 with a new format, with the 2 Champion's facing each other in just one game. In the season 2007–2008 it returned to the ligule type competition. In 2009, a new competition named Iberian Rugby Cup was designed. This style of rugby was meant to be played with 8 teams, four of each federation, although it was suspended.
