''Assignment K'' is a 1968 British neo noir thriller film directed by Val Guest in Techniscope and starring Stephen Boyd, Camilla Sparv, Michael Redgrave, Leo McKern, Robert Hoffmann and Jeremy Kemp. The film was based on the 1964 novel ''Department K'' by Hartley Howard. Plot A British spy has his cover blown, leading to the East German Stasi kidnapping his girlfriend to try to extract information about his double agents' activities. Val Guest (born Valmond Maurice Grossman; 11 December 1911 – 10 May 2006) was an English film director and screenwriter. Beginning as a writer (and later director) of comedy films, he is best known for his work for Hammer, for whom he directed 14 films, and science fiction films. He enjoyed a long career in the film industry from the early 1930s until the early 1980s. Joachim Hansen (28 June 1930 – 13 September 2007) was a German actor. He was best known for film roles in the 1960s and 1970s in which he often portrayed Nazi officers and World War II German officials. Geoffrey Bayldon
Albert Geoffrey Bayldon (7 January 1924 – 10 May 2017) was an English actor. After playing roles in many stage productions, including the works of William Shakespeare, he became known for portraying the title role of the children's series ''Catweazle'' (1969–70). Bayldon's other long-running parts include the Crowman in ''Worzel Gummidge'' (1979–81) and Magic Grandad in the BBC television series ''Watch'' (1995). Basil Dignam (24 October 1905 – 31 January 1979) was an English character actor. Basil Dignam was born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire. Before the acting, he tried many jobs, from a company clerk to a journalist. He acted on film and television between 1948 and 1978. Ursula Howells (17 September 1922 – 16 October 2005) was an English actress whose elegant presence kept her much in demand for roles in film and television. Life and career Howells was born in London, the daughter of composer Herbert Howells, and was educated at St Paul's Girls' School, where her father worked as Director of Music. She made her first stage appearance at Dundee in 1939, in John Drinkwater's ''Bird in Hand'', then moved to Oxford in 1942 and three years later made her London debut at the Embassy Theatre, Swiss Cottage. Jan Werich (; 6 February 1905 – 31 October 1980) was a Czech actor, playwright and writer. Early life Between 1916 and 1924, Werich attended "reálné gymnasium" (equivalent to high school) in Křemencova Street in Prague (where his future business partner, Jiří Voskovec, also studied). Carl Möhner
Carl Martin Rudolf Möhner (11 August 1921 – 14 January 2005) was an Austrian film actor, director, screenwriter and painter. He appeared in more than 40 films between 1949 and 1976. His most famous roles were as Jo "le Suédois" in the 1955 French heist film ''Rififi'' and as Captain of Battleship Bismarck in the film Sink the Bismarck!. Möhner retired from filming in 1976. He married Wilma Langhamer, a German painter in 1978. In 1979 the couple settled down in McAllen, Texas, where Carl died from Parkinson's disease in 2005. He had two sons, Gunther and Gernot (also actors) from a previous relationship.
