Asharaf
The Asharaf, also spelled Ashraf (from the , ), is a Somali clan. Their name is the plural of , an originally Arabic term designating those who claim descent from the family of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Belonging to the larger group of Somali clans living in the southern parts of the country called the Benadiri, they fall outside of the traditional Somali clan structures and are often marginalized within Somalia. As a minority, they have been the target of violent Islamist groups such as the al-Shabaab. Contrary to most other Somali clans, who trace their ancestry to Muhammad's cousin and Ali's older brother Aqil ibn Abi Talib, the Asharaf claim descent from Hasan and Husayn, the sons of Ali and Muhammad's daughter Fatima. Like the claims of other Somali clans in this regard, this alleged genealogy is historically untenable, and may be understood as part of what Sada Mire has called "the Somali Islamic myth of origin". Benadiri People
The Banaadiri people (, ) are a people group in Somalia. Banaadiris largely inhabit Somalia's southern coastline. Overview The Benadiris originate from Arab tribes who settled the southern coast of Somalia and built stone towns for defense and trade. Some group members trace their origins to diverse groups. The latter includes Arab, Indian, Persian, Bantu, and Somali people. Although the Benadiri are sometimes described as the founders of Mogadishu (hence, their colloquial name ''Reer Xamar'' or "People of Mogadishu"), the city itself is postulated to be a successor of ancient city of Sarapion. Reer Xamar were instrumental in helping to consolidate the local Muslim community, especially in the coastal Benadir region. During the colonial period, they were also among the founding members of the Somali Youth League, Somalia's first political party.I. M. Ashraf Dialect
Ashraf () is a speech variety of Somali spoken in the Marka district of the Lower Shebelle region and Banaadir region of southern Somalia. Classification According to Blench (2006) there are two sub-dialects: Shingaani and Lower Shebelle. As noted in recent work on the speech variety, Green & Jones (2016):"''What we hope to have illustrated in this talk is that while Marka (Af Ashraaf) may be similar in certain ways to both Northern Somali and Maay, it nonetheless boasts a number of unique properties, particularly in its morphology, that we believe merit its treatment not as a Somali or Maay dialect, but as a language variety of its own''"A similar level of skepticism towards the labelling of other Omo-Tana languages in Somalia (such as Maay, Dabarre, Jiddu) is expressed in Tosco (2012): The Unity and Diversity of Somali Dialectal Variants. Samaale
Samaale, also spelled Samali or Samale () is traditionally considered to be the common forefather of several major Somali clans and their respective sub-clans. His name is the source of the ethnonym ''Somali''.. As the purported ancestor of most pastoralist clans living in the northern part of Somalia, Samaale lies at the basis of the largest and most widespread Somali lineage (the second largest lineage belonging to Samaale's brother Sab, the purported progenitor of most southern, cultivating clans). The main branches of the Samaale clan are the Dir, the Hawiye, the Isaaq, the Darod, and the 'pre-Hawiya' group (containing the Gardere, the Yakabur, and the Mayle). Both the Samaale and the Sab claim to be ultimately descended from the Arab clan of the Quraysh through Aqil ibn Abi Talib (), a cousin of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and older brother of Ali. Although these claims of descent are historically untenable, they do reflect the longstanding cultural contacts betwee ... Sunni Islam
Sunni Islam is the largest Islamic schools and branches, branch of Islam and the largest religious denomination in the world. It holds that Muhammad did not appoint any Succession to Muhammad, successor and that his closest companion Abu Bakr () rightfully succeeded him as the caliph of the Muslim community, being appointed at the meeting of Saqifa. This contrasts with the Succession of ʿAlī (Shia Islam), Shia view, which holds that Muhammad appointed Ali, Ali ibn Abi Talib () as his successor. Nevertheless, Sunnis revere Ali, along with Abu Bakr, Umar () and Uthman () as 'Rashidun, rightly-guided caliphs'. The term means those who observe the , the practices of Muhammad.
