Asad, Muhammad
Muhammad Asad (born Leopold Weiss; 2 July 1900 – 20 February 1992) was an Austro-Hungarian Muslim polymath, born in modern day Ukraine. He worked as a journalist, traveler, writer, political theorist, and diplomat. His translation of the Quran in English, "''The Message of The Qur'an''" (1980) is one of the most notable of his works. In Asad's words in "''The Message of the Quran''": "the work which I am now placing before the public is based on a lifetime of study and of many years spent in Arabia. It is an attempt – perhaps the first attempt – at a really idiomatic, explanatory rendition of the Qur'anic message into a European language." By age 13, Weiss had acquired a passing fluency in Hebrew and Aramaic, in addition to his native German and Polish languages. By his mid-twenties, he could read and write in English, French, Persian and Arabic. Islamic studies is the academic study of Islam, which is analogous to related fields such as Jewish studies and Quranic studies. Islamic studies seeks to understand the past and the potential future of the Islamic world. In this multidisciplinary program, scholars from diverse areas (history, culture, literature, art) participate and exchange ideas pertaining to the particular field of study. Generations of scholars in Islamic studies, most of whom studied with Orientalist mentors, helped bridge the gap between Orientalism and Religious studies. The subfield that grew out of this effort is called "Islamic studies."
