Arthur Annesley, 10th Viscount Valentia (30 November 1785 – 30 December 1863) was an English-born land-owner, an Irish peer and the Premier Baronet of Ireland. Family Arthur Annesley was born on 30 November 1785, the eldest son of Arthur Annesley, MP for Oxford between 1790 and 1796, and his wife, Catherine Hardy, a daughter of Admiral ''Sir'' Charles Hardy. He was a male-line, paternal descendant of the first Viscount Valentia. He married, on 12 August 1808, Eleanor O'Brien, the daughter of Henry O'Brien (later Stafford-O'Brien) of Blatherwycke park, Northamptonshire and his wife Margaret Flenary. Arthur Annesley, 11th Viscount Valentia
Arthur Annesley, 11th Viscount Valentia, (23 August 1843 – 20 January 1927) was a British soldier, courtier and Conservative Party politician. He notably served as Comptroller of the Household between 1898 and 1905. Background and education Annesley was the eldest son of the Honourable Arthur Annesley by his wife Flora Mary Macdonald, daughter of Lt. Colonel James Macdonald of Clanranald. His father died when he was one year old and he succeeded his grandfather in the viscountcy in 1863. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Military career Annesley joined the 10th Hussars in 1864 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1868. He retired from the Army in 1872, but in 1894 was appointed Lieutenant colonel of the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars. In early 1900, Lord Valentia was seconded for service with the Imperial Yeomanry in the Second Boer War, and left for South Africa in the '' SS Scot'' in late January. Viscount Valentia
Viscount Valentia is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It has been created twice. The first creation came in 1621 for Henry Power. A year later, his kinsman Sir Francis Annesley, 1st Baronet, was given a "reversionary grant" of the viscountcy, which stated that on Power's death Annesley would be created Viscount Valentia. Annesley, a member of an influential Anglo-Irish family which descended from Newport Pagnell in the County of Buckinghamshire, was a favourite of James I, who granted him land in Ireland, notably the fort of Mountnorris in County Armagh. He was knighted in 1616, created a baronet, of Newport Pagnell in the County of Buckingham, in the Baronetage of Ireland in 1620 and Baron Mountnorris, of Mountnorris in the County of Armagh, in 1628. George Annesley, 2nd Earl of Mountnorris Royal Society, FRS (4 December 1770 – 23 July 1844), styled Viscount Valentia between 1793 and 1816, was a British peer and politician. Background Mountnorris was the son of Arthur Annesley, 1st Earl of Mountnorris, and the Hon. Lucy, daughter of George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton. He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford in 1787, and left in 1789 without taking a degree. Hercules George Robert Robinson, 1st Baron Rosmead, (19 December 1824 – 28 October 1897), was a British colonial administrator who became the 5th Governor of Hong Kong, then 13th Governor of Ceylon, and subsequently, the 14th Governor of New South Wales, the first Governor of Fiji, and the 8th Governor of New Zealand. Sir Henry Robinson, 1st Baronet
Sir Henry Augustus Robinson, 1st Baronet, (20 November 1857 – 16 October 1927) was an Irish civil servant. Life and career Henry Robinson was born in Dublin, the son of Sir Henry Robinson (1823–1893) and his wife Eva (née Medora), daughter of the 10th Viscount Valentia. Although he initially started work in a London merchant's office, he followed his father into the Irish Civil Service at the age of nineteen. He served in a number of temporary positions before being appointed an inspector with the Local Government Board for Ireland, with which he remained for the rest of his career. He eventually became vice-president of the Board, a position previously held by his father and generally the body's operational leader, in 1898, and retired in 1922. Robinson left Ireland in 1923, selling his Foxrock house, and went to live in Ealing as his life was under threat.
