Arlington is a neighborhood on the North Shore, Staten Island, North Shore of Staten Island in New York City. It is a subsection of the Mariners Harbor, Staten Island, Mariners' Harbor neighborhood, located north of the North Shore Branch, and west of Harbor Road. Arlington was given its name by Civil War veteran and resident Moses Henry Leman, in recognition of Arlington National Cemetery. Arlington is the location of the Arlington Terrace Apartments on Holland Avenue. The term North Shore is frequently applied to a series of neighborhoods within the New York City borough of Staten Island. Boundaries Generally, the North Shore is deemed to include the communities located within ZIP codes 10303, 10302 and 10310 in their entirety, along with all of the area covered by 10301 except Sunnyside, and those parts of 10304, 10305, 10314 that lie north of the Staten Island Expressway. Mariners Harbor, Staten Island
Mariners Harbor is a neighborhood located in the northwestern part of New York City's borough of Staten Island. It is bordered by Lake Avenue to the east, Forest Avenue to the south, Richmond Terrace to the north, and Holland Avenue to the west. The northwestern section of Mariners Harbor is often known as Arlington. History The neighborhood is named for its 19th-century harvesting of oysters and other seafood products from the Kill Van Kull, which forms the neighborhood's northern border ( Elm Park and Port Ivory lie to the east and west, respectively, while Graniteville is to the south). Later developments included shipbuilding, repair and marine salvage work. Fishing activity declined due to pollution during the 20th century. North Shore Branch
The North Shore Branch is a partially abandoned branch of the Staten Island Railway in New York City, which operated along Staten Island's North Shore, Staten Island, North Shore from St. George, Staten Island, Saint George to Port Ivory, Staten Island, Port Ivory. The line continues into New Jersey via the Arthur Kill Vertical Lift Bridge to Aldene Connection, Aldene Junction in Cranford, New Jersey, Cranford. The line started construction in 1884, and rapid transit service on the line started on February 23, 1886. Passenger service on the North Shore Branch ended on March 31, 1953, although freight service continued to run along part of the North Shore Branch until 1989. Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery is the largest cemetery in the United States National Cemetery System, one of two maintained by the United States Army. More than 400,000 people are buried in its 639 acres (259 ha) in Arlington County, Virginia. Arlington Station (Staten Island Railway)
Arlington was a station on the abandoned North Shore Branch of the Staten Island Railway, in Staten Island, New York. Located in an open-cut from the St. George Terminal, it had two tracks and one island platform. For a few years before its closure in 1953, it was the western (railroad direction south) terminus of the North Shore Line; before then, the terminus was the Port Ivory station to the west, though most trains terminated at Arlington. It was located in the Arlington and Mariners Harbor sections of Staten Island, near the Arlington Yard, under the South Avenue overpass, between Arlington Place and Brabant Street. Staten Island Railway
The Staten Island Railway (SIR) is a rapid transit, railroad line in the New York City borough (New York City), borough of Staten Island. It is owned by the Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority (SIRTOA), a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and operated by the New York City Transit Authority Department of Subways. SIR operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing local service between St. George Terminal, St. George and Tottenville station, Tottenville, along the east side of the island. Rocco Laurie Intermediate School
The Rocco Laurie Intermediate School refers to New York City Intermediate School 72 in Staten Island, New York. It is a Title I school. It is located at 33 Ferndale Avenue in Heartland Village, Staten Island. Heartland Village is part of New Springville, Staten Island. The school was named after P.O. Rocco Laurie and is across the street from Public School 69. History The school opened in 1975 and has served approximately 2000 students annually. Heartland Village is a residential development located close to the geographic center of Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City, USA. The name is also often used to denote the immediately surrounding area. Heartland Village is located within the New Springville neighborhood of Staten Island.
