Arlington, Missouri
Arlington is an unincorporated community in western Phelps County, Missouri, United States. The community is located just northeast of the confluence of Little Piney Creek and the Gasconade River. I-44 passes just to the east and the Burlington Northern Railroad passes the south edge of the community. The community of Jerome lies approximately three-quarters of a mile to the northwest across the Gasconade. History Arlington was originally called Little Piney. At times troops from the 5th Missouri State Militia Cavalry garrisoned there. Originally settled by Thomas Harrison and James Harrison and later established as a township by General Fremont ''circa'' 1867, the town was renamed for the former Robert E. Lee plantation (later a cemetery) at Arlington, Virginia, Folk etymology maintains the name honors Arlie, the wife of a local merchant. Newburg, Missouri
Newburg is a city in Phelps County, Missouri, United States. The population was 470 at the 2010 census. History Newburg was founded in 1883 by St. Louis – San Francisco Railway as a division point for the railroad, where engines would stop for repairs and to change crews. It is currently used heavily by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a maintenance stop, with a large supply of railroad materials along the double tracks. Iron working was attempted twice in Newburg. Easy access to the railroad made heavy industry a viable business. Construction of the Ozark Iron Works began after 1867, but the business went bankrupt in 1877. The Knotwell Iron Company attempted to use the facilities in 1880, but quit shortly afterwards due to a severe drop in iron prices. After World War II, the railway switched from coal to diesel engines, which could run much longer distances without refueling. Interstate 44 In Missouri
Interstate 44 (I-44) in the US state of Missouri runs northeast from the Oklahoma state line near Joplin to I-70 in Downtown St. Louis. It runs for about in the state, and is the longest Interstate Highway in the state. Route description I-44 enters Missouri in Newton County at the eastern terminus of the Will Rogers Turnpike, south of the Kansas state line. The first interchange in Missouri is the eastern terminus of both U.S. Route 166 (US 166) and US 400. This highway next goes through southern Joplin and then begins to run concurrently with I-49/ US 71 at exit 11 just after entering Jasper County. Fort Leonard Wood (military Base)
Fort Leonard Wood is a U.S. Army training installation located in the Missouri Ozarks. The main gate is located on the southern boundary of the city of St. Robert. The post was created in December 1940 and named in honor of General Leonard Wood (former Chief of Staff) in January 1941. Originally intended to train infantry troops, in 1941 it became an engineer training post with the creation of the Engineer Replacement Training Center. During World War II Italian and German POWs were interned at the fort. In 1984, as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process, most of the U.S. Army Engineer School's operations were consolidated at Fort Leonard Wood. Before that, officer training was conducted at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Pacific Railroad
The Pacific Railroad (not to be confused with Union Pacific Railroad) was a railroad based in Missouri. It was a predecessor of both the Missouri Pacific Railroad and St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. The Pacific was chartered by Missouri in 1849 to extend "from St. Louis to the western boundary of Missouri and thence to the Pacific Ocean." Due to a cholera epidemic in St. Louis in 1849 and other delays, groundbreaking did not occur until July 4, 1851. The railroad purchased its first steam locomotive from a manufacturer in Taunton, Massachusetts; it arrived at St. Louis by river in August 1852. On December 9, 1852, the Pacific Railroad had its inaugural run, traveling from its depot on Fourteenth Street, along the Mill Creek Valley, to Cheltenham in about ten minutes. Arlington National Cemetery is the largest cemetery in the United States National Cemetery System, one of two maintained by the United States Army.
