Arkan (dance)
''Arkan'' () is a popular circle dance of the Ukrainian Hutsul people (from Hutsulshchyna, southwestern Ukraine). The word literally means lasso, borrowed from the Romanian language, derived from the Turkic word arkan, meaning 'rope', 'lasso'. Dance The Arkan is traditionally performed around a burning bonfire by the men. The word Arkan also refers to the step that the men perform while dancing around the fire. The step begins with the right foot stepping to the side (or double stamping as the dance builds momentum), the left foot crosses behind, the right footsteps to the side again, and the left foot is hopped in front of the dancer with a bent knee. The dance is performed with the men's arms upon one another's shoulders. In professional Ukrainian dances, however, many variations may accompany this root step. The rhythm of Arkan is 2/4. It is sometimes also called ''laţ'' or ''pripon'', meaning "lasso"/"tether" or "aiguillette". Ukrainian-Canadian Culture
Ukrainian Canadians are Canadian citizens of Ukrainian descent or Ukrainian-born people who immigrated to Canada. In the late 19th century, the first Ukrainian immigrants arrived in the east coast of Canada. They were primarily farmers and labourers who were looking for a better life and economic opportunities. Most settled in the western provinces of Canada, particularly in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. These provinces offered fertile land and economic opportunities for farming, which was a familiar occupation for most Ukrainians. Ukrainian immigrants were able to establish a strong community in Canada. They built churches, community centres, and cultural organizations to preserve their language and traditions. A circle is a shape consisting of all points in a plane that are at a given distance from a given point, the centre. The distance between any point of the circle and the centre is called the radius. The Lemon Bucket Orkestra
The Lemon Bucket Orkestra is a Canadian self-described "Guerrilla-Folk-Punk" band based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The ensemble has received many nominations and awards such as winning the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Awards “World Group of The Year” and a nominationthe 2016 JUNO Awards “World Music Album of the Year”. Lemon Bucket has also performed all over the world from WOMAD in England and New Zealand, Pohoda in Slovakia, Festival D’Été in Québec City and to New Orleans Jazz Fest in Louisiana. Early history Founding member Mark Marczyk met bartender and musician Michael Louis Johnson in 2009 after returning to Toronto from Kyiv, Ukraine.
