Aringay, La Union
Aringay, officially the Municipality of Aringay (; ; ), is a coastal municipality in the province of La Union, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 50,380 people. Known in Philippine History as the birthplace of revolutionary leader Diego Silang, its economy is based primarily on agriculture - producing rice, tobacco and fruit crops as economic staples. A nascent tourism industry is centered on its beach resorts. Its ethnic population is predominantly Ilocano and Christian (Roman Catholic). Etymology The name "Aringay" is attributed to two main theories. The first theory suggests that the name originated from an early settlement known as ''Alingay, Alinguey,'' or ''Aringuey,'' which thrived through gold trading along the coastal areas and the Aringay River during the 15th-16th century. Aringay Centennial Tunnel
The Centennial Tunnel is an abandoned railway tunnel in Aringay, La Union, Philippines. The tunnel is long and wide. Background The Centennial Tunnel was meant to be part of a passenger railway line which would connect Aringay to Baguio. The railway line's construction began in 1911 by British firm Manila Railway Co. (MRC) Ltd. The Aringay station was completed in 1912. Construction of the tunnel itself in 1913 would begin. However World War I forced MRC to abandoned the project. During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines of World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army used the tunnel as a headquarters. Diego Silang y Andaya (; December 16, 1730 – May 28, 1763) was a Filipino revolutionary leader who allied with British forces to overthrow Spanish rule in the northern Philippines and establish an independent Ilocano state. La Union (), officially the Province of La Union (; ; ; ; ; ), is a coastal province in the Philippines situated in the Ilocos Region on the island of Luzon. The province's capital, the San Fernando, La Union, City of San Fernando, is the most populous city in La Union and serves as the regional center of the Ilocos Region.
